The welcome back feast was supposed to be lighthearted. First year students were supposed to be waiting outside in the foyer, nervous about what house they would be sorted in or because they were about to be in front of a lot of older students, while the older students were busy chattering happily about their summer holiday and catching up. First year students were not supposed to be nervous and scared because of a sudden stop on the train followed by side-along apparition or a broom ride. Older students were not supposed to be theorizing about what had happened, who had done it, and why. Milo could only hope the first years' boat ride had given them time to calm down and that the carriage ride for the second years and older had done the same for them.
During his first school year here (last year), Milo had been sitting at the professor's table thinking how strange it was to sit up there instead of at one of the four long tables down below, fighting back nerves because he was new and eyes were on him, and being amused watching certain students. He had thought this year would be without any nervousness or awkwardness. It seemed some things never changed.
Milo sighed as he sat there, glancing over at the headmaster who was sitting in the center chair conversing with the deputy. They seemed to be in deep conversation, so Milo turned his attention back to the students before leaning forward, placing his elbows on the table, and resting his chin in his palms and his hands on his face. Two Imperium Guards were lined near the double doors, one by the door the professors entered through, and he was sure there were probably one or two at every other main entrance throughout the school. He only knew of two. So...ten guards to frighten the first years with? Nice. At least there weren't any dementors or many more guards. That would've been completely traumatizing to the younger students, he figured, though really, eleven wasn't all that young.
Hopefully this party would be started soon. Hopefully. He didn't think he could just sit here much longer.
