Footsteps echoed along the corridor... but there was no-one there. Of course, there was actually someone there, but seeing as they were under a heavy Disillusionment Charm and sticking to the shadows, they weren't able to be seen other than the occasional flicker in unavoidable patches of light that could easily be mistaken for a shy ghost passing through, or perhaps even just the mind playing tricks. Of course, there weren't many of these occurrences: there aren't many patches of light in a dungeon, let alone unavoidable ones. Still, after a while, even the sounds of the footsteps ceased, due to a hasty Muffliato spell when a group of Slytherin second years passed by. The group didn't know it, but after that moment, they were followed.
When the group reached the entrance to their common room, they spoke the password like usual, walking with confidence through the now-open wall. If they had bothered to look, they might've seen a small flicker in the doorway just before the wall re-shut, but since they were too busy talking about the odd things that had happened in the Great Hall and entrance hall at dinnertime, none of them looked. Since the common room was rather dark, only lit by a fire on one side of the room and a few feeble lamps around the rest of it, no-one there noticed the flicker, almost like a heat haze, moving along the perimeter of the room. As soon as it reached the hallways leading to the dormitories, it vanished into one of them, only to reappear a few seconds later, followed by two sixth year girls. They might've seen the thing, had it stopped and remained in one place, but since it immediately re-vanished into the other hallway, they didn't spot it.
The flicker wasn't visible in the dark hallway, but beside the doors which lined the hall, each of which had a torch beside it, it was momentarily visible directly in front of the door, as though it was reading the signs that told which year of students stayed in each room. Finally, it paused, for rather longer than usual, in front of the one that said "Seventh Years," and, with a slow creak, the door swung open. The flicker passed through it soundlessly and headed into the room, moving right for the only occupant of the room. It stopped directly before it... and a girl suddenly appeared in its place: a slender girl with nearly white hair, of slightly above average height and definitely far above average beauty. She opened her mouth as if to speak to the boy before whom she stood, then stopped, shaking her head, and flicked her wand at herself, removing the other spell she'd put on herself. She pointed the wand over her shoulder, and a momentary crackle could be heard, signalling that she had cast the same Muffliato spell around the two of them. Another tiny wave of her wand caused the door to swing shut once more, and the lock within it to snap into place.
"Why'd you do it, Ri?" she asked, her tone almost conversational, but the look in her dark eyes revealed that she was actually quite angry. Furious, in fact. "What right did you have? What right? You didn't just hurt Cross with that little stunt of yours, you know!" The girl crossed her arms over her narrow waist, one eyebrow raised, apparently waiting for the young man to answer her.
