Follows: Secrets
12 September 2011
2:40 p.m.
The trek from the Shrieking Shack had been the longest he had any recollection of making. He had spent the entire time silent despite the urge to scream and yell at those unseen entities, the fates. It was the only thing he could think of that would make himself feel better, but with Hogsmeade village so near most of the journey, and Hogwarts the other part, he hadn't wanted to do so. He would have to wait until he had his pillow and the seventh year boy's dormitory to himself. That couldn't come soon enough. Still, he knew it was unlikely he would have the dorms to himself right now. Unless every seventh year boy miraculously had a class right after defense, that is. Somehow, he doubted it.
As soon as Justin had gotten within several yards of the gates, he stopped to retrieve his hidden broom and flew over the gates, landing somewhere over by the pitch. Then, he began walking towards the castle, debating whether or not to do as Conleth had said and go to his office. He may as well get it over with, right? He was going to his doom before the day was over, so he may as well just take care of it. Still, maybe he should try to enjoy his last few moments of freedom--if that was possible, that is. If he wanted any chance at enjoying his last moments of freedom, he'd still be back with Melissa, snogging her rather than having second thoughts about snogging her in the present situation. Maybe they'd have merely been cuddling listlessly by now, but still, at least they'd have each other. Right now? Neither of them had anyone.
With a sigh, Justin set his broom down by the lake and picked up a smooth rock, chucking it with sheer force as far as he could across the lake before letting himself drop down on the bank. What was he going to do now? He couldn't see Lissa anymore even if by some miracle this wasn't his last day of freedom. The professor made that abundantly clear. Lissa had only made it clearer when she had agreed with Conleth's words.
"I love this time, Justin, really I do. You are so amazing, it's the one good thing in my life. But you have to understand that when you go back to school I go back to Lance. When I'm here it is perfect, just like old times, but I go back. What about when the school year's over, you can't stay forever. Your life will move on, mine wont..."
The words had stung more than anything else. He had to move on, even if Conleth wasn't turning him in, even if he really wanted to help. He couldn't buy her. Melissa had said that herself.
" Justin they, they wont allow it..."
And he'd made her cry. She was so worried about him having something bad happen to him, she had cried. He couldn't cause her that worry anymore. He had to stay away, had to find some way to carry on with life, but how?
