It was déjà vu walking through Diagon Alley. The last time she had been here with it looking this nice, she had been fifteen. Back then, she had been a rebellious teenager looking for any way to spite her father, and she had gotten away with much of it from stealing to partying--all but the sleeping with Alexander Fletcher. But that had been her own naivety and stupidity at play. She had known next to nothing about any of that stuff, and look where it had landed her: sixteen and pregnant, removed from Hogwarts, and homeschooled for the remainder of her sixth year and her seventh year. Even though the school had shut down, her parents had insisted.
Things had grown progressively worse for the wizarding world following her graduation, and if she had been more politically minded at the time, she might have known exactly what happened. As it was, she had been so caught up with getting away from her parents' home she hadn't paid much attention, especially once Henry Gilbert had gathered her under his spell and she had joined the Death Eaters.
Delilah sighed heavily, shaking her head. Her younger self had been stupid, but maybe this mission could make up for everything. Too bad she couldn't have been sent back far enough in time to stop the Fletcher Fiasco from happening. But this was what it was. And she was supposed to be on the lookout for any clues as to what could have lead to Trevor's insanity--at least, that was the best she and Julian could come up with as a reason for why they had been sent back. That and trying to ensure everything didn't go to hell in a hand basket.
And it all stemmed back to that damned kidnapping--or so she had a feeling. And that had just happened. Some investigators they were. But at least they knew how it happened now. Still, it would have been nice to have known that about three weeks ago.
Some things bugged her about the kidnapping, though. Why were all the details so elusive? Why couldn't they find anything else? Why was their only clue related to an animagus rat man in the shadows and nothing more? They'd thought the Order would be the culprit, but they were practically disbanded and not a threat. SAVIOR wasn't doing much that she had read about. So, what was it? Was there another resistance group out there somewhere, just waiting to strike? More than one? Was it something else? Another Death Eater looking for power? Was it a slave ring looking for some easy money?
Delilah was so lost in thought as she turned into the cafe with the intent of ordering a drink she didn't notice....
