The harsh, unforgiving cold of winter has long set in. Snow covers the ground and students tend find things to do inside as much as possible. With the Yule Ball fast approaching, students certainly have things to discuss and plan.

Politically, things are nowhere near as sound as people are lead to believe. There is turmoil amongst the ranks of the Death Eaters as Callid Warren and Fierro Darque plot against Trevor Williams, who is aided by Sienna Faber, but can she be trusted? Even amongst the people, there seems to be social unrest as SAVIOR works to free slaves and the leader of the Order of the Phoenix finds himself captured. Unification is necessary, but will it happen?

Playable: 17-31 December 2010

 One Step Closer [ Elena D. ]
« Thread Started on Jun 20, 2009, 11:58pm »

18 October 2010
8 a.m.

Nothing was according to plan.

Arguably, Casey Winslow no longer had a clue what the plan was. After all, he had so many desires pulling him so many different ways and two women vying for his attention--now possibly only one. He wasn't sure. He didn't care anymore, really. It was too frustrating to care. It distracted him from what had to be done. First and foremost, that was to get Julian to supposed safety and get Evie away from the bastard. He couldn't force her to go anywhere with him. If he could, he would have never let her go the evening before when he'd told her the truth, but he knew Evie better than that. She wouldn't have allowed it for an instant--especially not with what Trevor had spoon fed her concerning him. It frustrated him to no end but that was life. Nothing was meant to be easy. Nothing was meant to be fair.

Yes, the morning had been so very fun between such morose thoughts and trying to force his son, who would rather not be awake much less within the same house with his dad, out of bed. Getting him to shower, dress, brush his teeth, and eat? He almost gave up on that, almost told him, "Fine, stink, look frumpy, and be starved when you get back to your cousins." However, he'd managed to reign in his temper, which took about all his energy. Now, he was standing with his son in front of a shop that sold some basic wizarding needs near the entrance to Knockturn Alley. He had seen people he knew to be Order here before, trying to blend in and sneak supplies. Why they didn't simply go into some other country's wizarding area and shop where it was safer was beyond him, but whatever. The Order had never really made much sense to him, especially since he'd been disillusioned.

With a quiet sigh, he shifted his weight and leaned against the building, his arms crossed. He glanced over at his hooded son momentarily before down at the ground. Julian had been quiet all morning. He hadn't said much since Casey had mentioned telling his "Stepford mum" the truth. Casey counted this partially as a blessing. It prevented things from getting worse between them than it was already. At least, he hoped. He didn't know if any of this was a good idea or not, but it's what Julian had demanded for months and he needed to be temporarily shed of his fatherly duties to save Evie yet again and sort through this myriad of emotions he was experiencing for two different women in two different ways for two very different reasons.

But as though to distract him from his thoughts, the sight of a familiar face roused him from his thoughts, and Casey pushed himself from the wall, still hooded as he said, "Elena," hoping that it would be odd enough for her to hear her name in these parts and in his voice that she would stop to look for the source.

((Totally forgot about this yesterday and today, but here we are. ^^ One step closer to Justin...no pun intended.))

Yet another supply run. It seemed like they were always running out of supplies at the safehouse. And so it was that Elena found herself in Knockturn Alley, hooded and cloaked, buying food and other sundries for the residents of Tutaminis Manor. Even though she had a job to do and couldn't linger anywhere, Elena reveled in just being outside the manor. Usually the women and children were kept inside the manor and Kyle, Damian, or the other men would go on supply runs, but Elena had made her case months ago. Being a former Curse-Breaker for Gringott's, Elena had argued with Damian and Kyle that she was more than capable of protecting herself from a surprise attack or whatever might go wrong while outside the manor. Luckily for Elena, they both agreed with her. So now, once a week every other week, Elena ventured to the outside world and brought back supplies for her fellow fugitives and got to enjoy the world for a precious few hours.

She stopped at a corner and pulled the list Damian had given her out of her pocket. Looking it over she double-checked that she had gotten everything that was needed, and seeing she had, placed the list back in her pocket (she would burn it later) and continued down the street. As she passed in front of a boarded-up storefront, she was startled into stopping, nearly causing a multiple-person pile-up, as she heard a voice call her name. Turning to the people who nearly ran into her, she apologized and stepped out of their way, looking around for the person who had called her name. Seeing a man in a dark cloak with his hood shadowing his face, Elena eyed him warily and answered, "...Yes?" That voice sounded so familiar...almost like Casey Winslow...but that was impossible, wasn't it? They had buried Casey with his children and in-laws months ago...

"Please don't panic," Casey said, daring to take a few steps closer to Elena after the group that had nearly run into her had cleared from the alley in as dignified a manner as possible. He had nearly laughed at how ridiculous they looked shepherding each other as they had, but he had refrained. Julian followed close behind, which surprised Casey. He hadn't thought Julian had even listened when he'd given him the lecture on how to behave out here in the streets and blend in this morning while he was eating. "I'm on your side," he continued once he was close enough to Elena to be able to keep his voice down in case anyone was hiding nearby. "This is my son, Julian." His voice was quieter yet as he uttered his son's name. It was, after all, an identifying feature. Who else would know her name that had a son named Julian? Not many, he would assume. Besides, the fact that Julian was merely a life-sized, life-like doll and not a real body just might have given the idea that Jules was lost out there somewhere and something had been planned--whether Trevor taking Julian and Evie but deciding to make it seem Julian was dead or Thomas Price (in which case it probably would appear an escape gone bad and Jules had escaped while Thomas had been attacked, he supposed), whose body had been found in the open screen door, the only real possible entry point given the amount of protective spells that had been on the safe house.

Keeping his voice hushed, he continued, this time providing why he was tracking her down. "I need you to take him to wherever the Order is hiding now. I told Evie the truth about who I am, and I don't want him caught in the crossfire, if she turns to him with the information, which she might do. I mean, the bastard implanted memories, made it seem as though I was abusive to her amongst other things." He cut himself off here. "Just...please, watch him, alright?" Yes, he had realized as he cut himself off that he might be giving too much information too soon, but he didn't trust the area, and he wanted away from the area, but he didn't know how else to get her to trust him enough to do so or if it was even possible. "Please, just come with me, if you want answers. I know a place the Guard never scouts."

Don't panic? Of course not! Why would she panic, when a strange man randomly knew her name in a dark alley and wanted to talk to her? That would make any sensible person panic, Elena thought, feeling her heart rate speed up. But Lena had been trained better than that. She would not panic until she felt she had reason to panic. Continuing to listen, Elena nearly laughed aloud when he claimed he was on her side. Because of course, he wouldn't claim that if he was a Death Eater trying to ambush her and take her to Azkaban. His next statement, however, stopped her cold in her tracks.

"This is my son, Julian."

Elena was sure her shock showed on her face, but she was unable to do anything about it at the moment. There was only one man with a son named Julian that would know her name, but that was impossible. It couldn't possibly be true! She had been at Casey's funeral, for Merlin's sake! Warily, she took a few steps toward the man, looking into the shadows of his hood trying to see his face. What she could see of his face convinced her enough of his truth, that she replied in a shocked whisper, "Of course I'll watch him... I'm sure Julian remembers me..." As her long thought-dead friend asked her to go with him so he could explain, Elena nodded and added, "I don't have a lot of time to spare, but I'll stay as long as I can..."

Casey nodded, motioning for her to follow him before turning heel and leading them to the end of Knockturn Alley to where Diagon Alley had once stood. Businesses were beginning to move in here or there, but as of yet, there was nothing really worth noting. Besides, many people seemed to like the anonymity a dark, narrow alley with crowded shops seemed to provide. The ability to hide or disappear was far easier than it was out in the open, and people rarely could remember the face of one person they had seen in the midst of many. However, none of that was important right now, and as much as he wanted to scold whomever was in the Order for letting Elena do this or anyone, for that matter, regardless of gender rather than send them to the muggle world, he also realized the muggle world didn't have to offer ever single potions ingredient needed, etc.

He continued walking for a good while, taking the time to stop at corners to look around andevery now and again taking time to glance at his son who was surprisingly remaining close when he had been worried he would lag far behind to avoid him. Once they reached the middle of the walkway to a small, run down white house with tall weeds in its yard, surrounding any pathways it had, he stopped, motioning them to stay back in the cover of the weeds before he walked into the house, looking around. He and Julian had been here very early this morning and had set their things there in a couple trunks before going to see if an Order member would show where he'd noticed them, so he didn't want to just barge in and be ambushed for obvious reasons. He and Julian would suffer greatly, and Elena would find herself suffering greatly as well for being a suspected member of the Order of the Phoenix if only for their knowledge of his former allegiance as well as aiding and abetting two enemies of the law or some such nonsense. Either way, he didn't want that for any of them.

Once he had deemed the place safe, he went back to the door and motioned them inside. He closed the door behind him before he removed his hood, figuring there was no longer any need for the pretense. His gaze fell on Elena as he met her eyes, giving her an awkward smile. "Surprise..." he offered weakly.

Elena allowed Casey to lead her through the winding ways of Knockturn Alley, toward the place he said was safe. She motioned Julian to walk behind his father and followed the boy, keeping him between her and Casey for safety's sake. If anyone came from behind she would at least be able to keep Julian safe long enough for him to either get away or long enough for Casey to do something. As she followed her friend, she couldn't help but think about how she was going to explain this to the rest of the Order. Casey and Julian had been thought dead for months; Elena had even gone to their funeral, for Merlin's sake, as had most of their other friends. Not only would it be difficult to explain they weren't really dead, but why only Julian came back to Tutaminis with her. But she was really just happy to see her friend alive and well at the moment. She would ask questions when they arrived at Casey's safe place.

As Casey looked around corners in front of them, Elena kept watch behind them, eyes darting at every small noise. Nothing seemed amiss, but she was still uneasy. Finally, they reached the place Casey claimed was safe. Following him inside and ushering Julian ahead of her when Casey cleared the house, Elena put down the few bags she was carrying and removed her hood. Meeting Casey's eyes as he spoke, she smiled back at him with a few tears in her eyes and crossed the room to hug him. "We all thought you were dead...what happened?"

((I still can't believe I forgot you'd replied to this. *headdesks and apologizes profusely*))

Casey loosely wrapped his arms around Elena and patted her back a couple of times before letting go of her as she asked her question. "Let's go sit down," he suggested before going over to the living room in the house and sitting down, waiting for her to do so as well before even considering starting to tell his tale. Truth was, even though he'd known the question would come, he didn't really want to have to explain what had happened. He'd thought about that night as seldom as possible. Of course, given that Evie had come and gone from his life a few times since that night, it was more than seldom that that night had come to mind. But it was life; it was how things were going to be, and he might as well be used to it. He was going to save her, and then he was going to let her go. It was as simple as that.

So, Casey adjusted how he was sitting, leaning forward and resting his arms over his legs as he stared forward a few moments before looking to Elena, his eyes hard set in an attempt to keep from giving into emotion even though he knew it ultimately wouldn't work. "I don't even know where to begin. That night was terrible. I lost everything that was important to me: my daughter, my wife, my unborn children, my marriage. I mean, I should have known something was wrong when Thomas Price of all people offered willingly to go into hiding with us when my own family wouldn't, but Evie seemed so relieved, and frankly, I was, too. I figured it was more protection for Evie and the kids if something happened, but I couldn't have been more wrong."

He took a moment to collect himself. He was not going to let grief get to him right now. He needed to tell her what had happened, the cold, hard facts. Nothing more. The time to feel was later. "That night, Thomas approached me, and he wanted to talk. He was in his robe, and I was there in front of the fireplace, reading. So, I set the book aside, but in the moment that it had taken for me to memorize the page I was on and setting it down, he had drawn his wand on me. I was confused, so I asked him what this was about, nervously joked that I knew things hadn't always been great between him and I but never worth this. He didn't say anything for the longest time or do anything. I could have easily taken control of the situation, but I was scared of one, him panicking and killing me or two, hurting him and then having to explain to Evie that oh, her father'd just tried to hurt him at the very least, if not kill him." He gave a bitter laugh.

"But finally, he lowered his wand, said he couldn't do it, and I asked him what he'd been trying to do, and he came out with this torrent about how Trevor had cornered him, asked him to take me out and do whatever it was and that once he had found out about the safe house, Trevor'd made him tell him where it was and to have him dead by sometime that night. So, of course, I knew I had to take action, but Evie was in there with Lydia, so all I could do was charm her bear that she'd forgotten in the living room to be a portkey and give it to her so if I couldn't get back she'd at least get out, and then I grabbed Jules, took him where he'd be safe and then headed back to the house, had to sneak in in case he was there, and he was.

"But I was too late."
He swallowed, looking down at his new audience: the floor. "Thomas was dead on the floor in front of the slider, and Lydia..." He hesitated, swiftly inhaling and tenting his hands over his face a moment as he took a few deep breaths. "She was gone, dead. He'd come earlier than he'd told Thomas. Evie was gone. I didn't know what he'd done with her or where he'd taken her. Evelyn was dead. I took some time for myself, and when I heard Sam come with the groceries and call for us, I panicked, and I left. I went to Jules. I thought the fewer people who knew we were alive, the better. I knew the rag doll that was in Julian's bed wouldn't fool you, but the body I planted in my bed I knew would. I just wanted anonymity to try to get her back, and I ran into her Valentine's day, just weeks after it all. I made the biggest mistake of my life there, but I needed to be close to her, and she was willing, and I was drunk...."

He sighed, licking his lips and swallowing after glancing at her and then looking back to the floor. "But she didn't know who I was. So, I told her... I told her about Cyrano de Bergerac, tried to find out how she'd react to the truth, how understanding she'd be. And I planned to just become friends with her, gain her trust, and then tell her because he'd already wiped her memory, already made her think I was an evil, abusive S.O.B. But then I just...I made my mistake, and I never saw her again, not until some bratty Ravenclaw was antagonizing her and I saved her, but even that didn't result in more meetings. And I don't know. We randomly ran into each other here and there.

"Last night was no different, but I don't know, Elena. Anymore, I know that I can't have her back. She's just a body with a different person. I can't look at her, have a relationship with her where she doesn't remember anything. It's just too weird seeing a stranger in my wife's body no matter how similar they are. I'm going to save her from Trevor, help her how I can, but when it all comes down to it, all we can ever be is friends, if that."
He sighed heavily, sitting back and resting his head against the back of the couch and closing his eyes while pinching the bridge of his nose. Yes, that was more than what she wanted to know, he was sure, but it all did answer, "What happened?" A broad question received a broad answer. With Casey Winslow, specifics were necessary when he'd ramble if you let him.
