The harsh, unforgiving cold of winter has long set in. Snow covers the ground and students tend find things to do inside as much as possible. With the Yule Ball fast approaching, students certainly have things to discuss and plan.
Politically, things are nowhere near as sound as people are lead to believe. There is turmoil amongst the ranks of the Death Eaters as Callid Warren and Fierro Darque plot against Trevor Williams, who is aided by Sienna Faber, but can she be trusted? Even amongst the people, there seems to be social unrest as SAVIOR works to free slaves and the leader of the Order of the Phoenix finds himself captured. Unification is necessary, but will it happen?

How to make friends & betray people {Kevin} « Thread Started on Jun 5, 2009, 12:53pm »
Saturday. September 25th, 2010 Around 9pm.
Viridian Manor was freezing. Especially for the Autumn, it was an unusual arctic temperature in the home of one Fierro Darque. Of course, Fierro preferred it that way. Heat only made him sweat, and on his designer fashions, that was just not acceptable. Not to mention, the heat of the fireplace made him flashback to his earlier days here, with his family. Brother and sister, mother and father...and then to the later years he spent here with his wife and daughter.
Daughter...
The word sent a chill down his spine.
He didn't hate Kara, no. He couldn't, even though she didn't belong to his noble bloodline. Alexandra's lies were enough to make him carry on the grudge even though she was already dead. Because Fierro killed her. the left corner of his mouth twitched as he thought of his dead ex-wife. Then he couldn't help but wonder where she was. He couldn't bear to think about how long it had been since he'd seen her last, and it frightened him a bit to even ponder the fact that she might be dead.
Williams' raid did attack the school that night she was supposedly there, the night he was supposed to save her, take her with him, trick her into joining them, and learn the darkness of his ways. Black's daughter or not, he had raised her. He was going to get her back.
"Where the devil are they?
Callid and Bristow were supposed to arrive this evening, as planned. They had spoken at the Masquerade, a few months before. It was that night they crossed paths, and in that same night they realized they could be good for each other due to the uncannily common interest: their hatred for the "almighty" Trevor Williams. Almighty was definitely an overstatement in Fierro's book. And it was about time someone showed up at just the right time to express that with him. Tonight they were supposed to go in deeper, discuss the subject further than they had that night, using words they couldn't dream of thinking within vicinity of Trevor's guard. Treason was a crime punishable by death, and as much as he was willing to die by his words, Fierro knew that last night was not the right time, nor the place to discuss such a thing.
Viridian Manor was the safest place they could meet, a place without Williams' surveillance, and enough time had passed since Fierro spoke with Trevor about his conversation with these two to sweep it under the rug, a foul or infraction on his record. A slap on the hand, maybe. A slap that was going to bounce back and hit Williams hard, when their intentions became actions in his reality.
Nine-thirty-seven, his watch read, making him a little frustrated at their urge to make such an entrance. Entrances were not important here, this intimate meeting was not going to be known by anyone except for the three in attendance. He tapped his foot impatiently, resting his head on his elbow as he sat at the piano. His fingers fell lightly and Fierror tapped a couple of keys to bring some noise into the silent home.
Then, he just waited.

"C'mon, Sark, I don't have time for this," Casey thought impatiently as he sat in the office at Azkaban, listening to his supposed superior (was he really with his crass nature?) rant about his lack of brutality towards the prisoners. He wanted to simply blurt out, "Minister Darque has requested my presence," or something similar to get Sark off his case, but that simply wasn't possible. If he did that, then there was chance that word would get back to the bastard who had his wife: their beloved leader. If it got back to him, then Trevor could be onto him and Darque at the very least. No, it would only be used as a last resort, if he mentioned anything about having a meeting with Darque. However, he simply wanted out of here. His shift had ended nearly an hour ago--at eight--and here he was stuck in an office with Sark. Somebody should kill him now. Somebody really should kill him now. He was sunk. Darque would begin to wonder if he truly wanted to help, perhaps be cross for his tardiness, but it wasn't his fault entirely.
"And here I thought 'Lucky me has day shift. I can make it and still possibly be home at a decent hour for Jules,'" Casey thought to himself as he looked up and noted two minutes had passed since he'd last looked at the clock. That was it. It was nine fifty-seven. He had to go. "If I promise to be a good boy and torture the damn inmates, will you let me go with just a swat on the hand?" he asked boredly with a hint of derisiveness. Yes, it was juvenile, but when one was being lectured in a way he hadn't been lectured since having lived under his parents' roof (Well, he took that back, Serena had reduced him to feeling like a child on a few occasions after she'd returned from being hunted down by Voldemort years ago.), how else was he supposed to feel? Pleased? Thrilled? Adult? Certainly not. And the things Sark was suggesting for him to do made him want to take his own wand and use the killing curse. Never a good thought to be pushed to have.
Sark eyed him, trying not to show amusement, with an air of contemplation. "You have been warned and will be watched."
"You mean you think you've lectured me enough?" Casey exclaimed sarcastically as he stood even if he believed it was probably a better idea to have said nothing and simply left.
As he reached the door, Sark stopped him with a comment. "I'll be watching you, Bristow."
With that creepy buggy look Sark had to him and the tone of voice he used, it was rather creepy to look over his shoulder at the man. He didn't bother to say anything in return and merely left, glancing at his watch. Nine fifty-nine.
Shit.
He quickly grabbed his things from his locker, shut and secured it, and hustled to get to where he could safely apparate, appearing directly before the Viridian manor. Once there, he knocked and entered, finding Darque. It was ten o' clock, closer to ten o' one, but what did it matter? At least it was in the same minute. "My apologies. Sark was being a nuisance as usual." That said, he looked around to realize he did not see Warren anywhere. "Is Warren here?" he asked before moving to pull out a seat, asking somewhat absently, "May I?"

Arching an eyebrow, Fierro looked at the door once the clock chimed at 10 precisely. It didn't shock him to hear the doorknob turning halfway through the minute, seeing that Bristow fellow appear just after a brief knock. Of course, he didn't move from the still, statue-like position he was frozen into on the piano bench. Simply he greeted the younger man with a slight bow of the head, acknowledging his presence with a quiet greeting rather than a roaring shout down the hall like he used to, back in the day when people knew him as the jolly one Nicholas. But like many of the relationships that had come and gone for him, his original identity, Nicholas, was long gone.
As Bristow brought up the name 'Sark', Fierro couldn't help but grumble as he shook his head. "Sounds like he's the same old bloke as before." Times moved, but hardly changed it seemed. Fierro once worked with the Ministry in guarding Azkaban, before it was taken over. Sark was there as well, a bottom-feeding troll of a man that he was. He just disgusted Fierro to no end. Luckily for him, he hardly had to work with scum like Sark, but considering his practically joined-at-the-hip ties with Williams, his job wasn't looking any better. Still, he felt a bit sorry for the boy.
Silence then befell the master of Viridian household while he watched the young fellow come through the foyer and closer to the living room area in which he inhabited. The fact that Warren's presence was broad and thus invisible at the moment, he figured that would be answer enough for the suspiciously eager-to-hate-Trevor, Imperium Guard. Fierro crossed his legs and shifted his position to face him, laying all attentions on him. This was his chance to assess the boy before Warren got there (if he even decided to show up), and every second was precious. If he was spying for Williams, there had to be a tell. There had to be a reason this man wanted Trevor's blood just as much as him or Callid, and he needed to know.
"Seems Warren's running a bit late." Fierro commenced to state the obvious. "But it's nice of you to at least show up." Callid's means were clear, justifiable and everyone knew them. If Fierro wanted to hear the boy's reason, he probably had to cut down to the chase. How, without being brash, would he be able to find this out? After all, he didn't invite him down to the manor for idle chit-chat.
"I invited you here for a reason. Of course, we couldn't say too much at the Masquerade. Although the three of us met under the wild circumstance that we happen to say the right things at the right time, there was indeed no words that would completely give us away. Even as we stepped out of the ballroom I knew we wouldn't be safe. I did my best to avert Trevor's suspicion from me months ago, when he pulled me into his office because he saw us talking. You should be safe, though. Warren and I got the bulk of his nonsense. I should've known he would do such a thing though. If I know Trevor like I do, he'll find anything to set blame onto me. And treason is a crime punishable by death, but these days -- what isn't?" As Fierro said those words, he quickly felt a knot in his stomach.
Death Eaters were never known for their changes of heart, their conscience, or compassion but when you've had time to contemplate your life, where it's leading, and who is taking you in certain directions...certain things are weighed in. Pros and cons, life and death, good and evil. Death Eaters were the followers of the Lord of all Evil, and that hadn't changed for years. But Fierro wasn't seeing eye to eye with Trevor, and that much was certain. "I'm going to get down to the bottom of this, lay it all out, so to speak. You came here today because you supposedly share that interest--that bond with Callid and me. The bond that could be very dangerous for the three of us. My question is why?"
Standing up from the piano, Fierro began to pace, walking back and forth for a moment until he came to a stop in front of him. "What is your motive, officer? Why did you stop to talk to us that night...about something so dangerous, it could cost you your life??"
Scare tactics were always Fierro's thing, but this wasn't what he intended to do. After all, this was his first coup, his first chance at starting some sort of revolution. If this Bristow guy wanted in, Fierro needed answers, and right away. No more dilly-dallying, they didn't have that kind of time.

Casey's eyes concentrated on Fierro as the man addressed him, and he could tell that the other's words were leading into something. He wasn't merely recapping the other night because, well, why should he have to? It wasn't as though he had developed amnesia of some sort or developed dementia in such a short time. It was clear something was up, and as he finally came to what he was wanting to know, the man relaxed a little mentally. So, he was testing him and his loyalties, probably feeling out for a spy. The situation was feeling all too familiar, and had he allowed himself the time to dwell on the feeling in his stomach, he would have quickly lost it. As it was, he forced himself to ignore the sinking feeling and the adrenaline beginning to course through his veins as his heart rate quickened.
Darque was not Voldemort. Darque would not make him commit some heinous crime to prove his loyalty.
However, that did not change the fact that he had to think quick. Too little or too much of a pause would arouse suspicion and that was not something that "Kevin" desired. He needed this too much. He needed Trevor dead. He would help assure this and tell Evie the truth and take her away the night before it would all go down, and that would work. Not before no matter how tempting it would be or how well he could convince himself that he needed to take the chance. Yeah, right, but in a perfect world this would all work in his favor. Let him fantasize.
This man wanted to know why he hated Trevor, though, and he began to ponder his story as the man went on to ask what had motivated him to stop and talk to them and to dare mention his hatred when it could have cost him his life. He needed a story and quick. Could he somehow manipulate the truth into a cleverly disguised lie? Not really. All of Kevin's family was still alive. So, it had to be something political. Honestly, too bad, "It's a long story; let's save it for another day," wouldn't suffice. It would spare him the nervousness and pressure, but whatever. He had done this sort of thing for months before. Never mind that that was thirteen years ago. He could still do this now. He had no other viable choice now that he'd entered into this whole conspiracy.
"Abridged or unabridged, Mr. Darque?" Casey inquired raising a brow. "To put it simply, the man's political ideals do not align with mine and I think there could possibly someone out there who is better suited. I believe that is worth the risk of my life, wouldn't you agree? To better society, to better our cause? And I honestly do not recall what it is that made me speak to the two of you that night, but I like to think it was lucky happenstance." He paused a moment as he completed the "abridged" version of why he disagreed. "But the same could be asked of you, could it not? For all I know, you could be doing this under Trevor's command to keep an eye out for possible usurpers to his authority, after all. That aside, you have quite a bit to lose if this heads south without time for you to frame Warren or me. So, why do you take this risk, Minister?"

Callid exited the ballroom of Warren Manor, slightly tired and looking a little worn. His ballroom, of course, did not serve its originally intended function. Rather, he had turned it into a practice area of sorts where he would perform all sorts of complex spells, hexes, and curses. This was practically all he did in his free time: look up spells from his vast array of books in the library, and then practice and memorize them. If he wasn't doing that he was most certainly plotting or carrying out actions to serve those plots.
Free time tended to be profuse these days and he wasn't about to waste it. Truth be told, his "job" for Williams didn't involve that much work. Trevor certainly hadn't wanted to give him too much power, and had simply given him a small title over a fairly useless job. He just had to keep the citizens of Southern England in their places, making sure everything was in order. Ironically this plan of limited power gave him much more time to devote to plotting. Most likely this was due to the fact that Williams knew that Callid would never take some useless job with mountains of paperwork and business to uphold. Callid would obviously outright refuse, stirring up unneeded tension for Williams. Callid Warren was nobody's lackey.
He had worked up quite a sweat in his workout of performing spells and practicing duels. Looking at an old grandfather clock just outside of the ballroom he saw that the time was seven-thirty-two: just an hour and a half before his scheduled meeting with Darque and Brindow at Viridian Manor. Good, he still had some time. Before cleaning up, however, he first headed into the kitchen and walked up to a small storage cupboard. Opening it revealed that it contained several different racks holding small vials, each with a various different potions in them. These were common potions that Callid used frequently; he kept the more difficult potions locked up down in his potions storage room in the basement.
He took a small vial containing a clear orange liquid and downed it in one gulp. It was Rejuvenating Serum, and Callid immediately began to feel the effects. He disliked using it too often, because it gave him a little bit of excess energy. However, he was about to go to a potentially treacherous meeting and was not going to do so feeling tired. He needed all of his wits about him tonight.
Callid then headed upstairs for a quick shower and to change. He chose out one of his many pairs of robes (this being a wizarding affair), this particular pair a dark navy blue. He then headed down the stairs only to see that it was now eight-fifty-two. He must have taken longer than he'd thought getting around. It was of no matter: apparition was instantaneous and he could easily still be there on time. Before departing he gave one final thought about just what he ought to bring to the meeting. He supposed that since this was the first meeting, he didn't need to bring anything other than his wand. Potential supplies would be brought to later meetings after they had discussed things.
Finally exiting the manor and getting on his way, he performed the home-defense spell Domarmum upon the manor before continuing down the manor walkway. His manor was now effectively sealed until its owner performed the countercharm. He always made sure to perform it these days. Ever since the break-in on the night of the Hogwarts attack by that Chase Downing, Callid had made certain nobody could sneak in while he was away. He still hadn't managed to figure out what book had been stolen or what purposes it served the man. They had never spoken much back when they both followed Voldemort, so Callid really knew nothing about him. All he did know is that the man obsessed over their fallen "master".
Callid continued walking down the path, lights next to the walkway magically flickering on and then off again as he passed by. He obviously needed to get outside the boundaries of his manor before he could apparate. Even though he still felt relatively on the grounds, he had his wand out, firmly grasped in his hand. He reached the gates to the manor, the polished gold W shining under the moonlight. With a flick of his wand the gates open, and he proceeded to exit the anti-apparition zone.
Right as he was about to apparate, however, he thought he saw something move out of the corner of his eye. It came from wooded area that surrounded his home and could have easily just been an animal of some kind. Still, Callid didn't take chances. He raised his wand and muttered "Homenum Revelio" It revealed that there was indeed another person lurking nearby. Who could it possibly be? A spy or assassin sent by Williams? Or was it just some hapless fool who had wandered far astray? No matter who, they would soon regret being he.
He apparated, but only into the woods to make it appear as though he had left for his destination. He then shifted into his animagus. This was it: the hunt was on. It must have taken him at least an hour of searching. Every few minutes he would transform back and use homenum revelio to make sure this person was still there. He began to lose hope and figured that they were probably disillusioned or under an invisibility cloak. Of course it was at that very moment that he found the fool. It was Mark Harris, one of Trevor's Imperium Guard, and the idiot was leaning up against a tree fast asleep. 'It must be boring trying sitting here watching my home doing nothing... Too bad for him' Callid thought to himself.
With a flick of his wand, he lifted the man up off the ground. With another flick he slammed him into a tree, and with another flick slammed him into another tree. He repeated this process about three more times before pinning him up against the final tree he had crashed into. He strolled up to the man and asked simply, "Why are you here? Did Williams send you here to spy? Answer me."
Harris managed to grumble "I ain't talkin' 'bout nuthin'"
"Well that's fine. You don't have to." Callid remarked, walking up to him. He stared directly into the man's eyes. It was time for Legilimency. Within a few moments Callid had everything he needed to know. "Perhaps next time Williams will send a more competent spy. Crucio." Harris fell to the ground with a thud and let out a loud screech of pain. After a few minutes of torture, Callid finally stopped. Before deserting the crumpled heap of a man, he had one last spell to perform. "Obliviate" He didn't need Williams knowing of this little incident, at least with a first hand account. Harris would probably wake from unconsciousness tomorrow and wonder why his body hurt so much.
With that little matter taken care of, Callid could now finally get to the task at hand. He apparated to Viridian Manor. He was well over an hour late by now and hoped that the two of them weren't too disgruntled. Not that he cared about their feelings, the meeting would just go smoother if they weren't. He walked quickly down the walkway and up to the manor before knocking on the door twice. After a few moments he opened the door and let himself in as far as the entrance way. He had his wand clasped tightly in hand. He was prepared should this be some sort of trick of Williams'.

The boy had a good point. He grew more intrigued by this young chap as time passed, and with every breath he took to speak every single eloquent syllable to explain his reason for being anti-Williams, Fierro was becoming more and more interested with his ideals. However, once the attention was turned back to him, Fierro smiled slyly and waited for the young one to finish before he started with his own explanation. It took a beat for him to start up, though. Fierro wasn't exactly sure why he had to explain himself to this new friend who shared a common enemy. Did he not open his doors and welcome him in? Was it not he who invited these two men to his own home?
Okay, Fierro realized, maybe it did seem a little shady. And once he started to speak, he used little to no hesitation in his voice, a confidence, rather, to prove to this new ally that he didn't have any qualms, any doubts about this coup. Fierro stood a few feet away from the boy, and slightly behind where he sat, folded his arms and took a big breath.
"I wouldn't do such a thing, and betray this strange triad of power, boy, because I simply loathe Trevor Williams, and everything that he stands for, and every brown-nosing twit that follows him. I've invited the two of you to Viridian Manor with the intent on rallying together and planning to knock that man out of power. Sure, he might be the all-knowing, or he might think so much of himself to 'know all', but he can't keep tabs on all of us, especially me. Even now he expects me to betray him, but I've given him little to be suspicious about. After the Masque, he pulled me into his office and spoke to me with worry and some doubt, but I deflected it easily. Since then, he's spoken little about me turning my back on his regime. I suspect Williams believes me to be loyal and trustworthy, when I am nothing of the sort when it comes to his seat in power. I can also assure you that Trevor or his men have never come close to Viridian Manor to bug it, and even if he has, we're under a protective charm here. No one will know about this meeting except the souls in attendance."
Strolling a couple of feet towards the foyer, Fierro shrugged, paced a bit before turning to the boy again. "To answer your question, lad, I take this risk because I simply...I simply have nothing more to lose, for it was all lost because of his bullshit and lies." Recalling the promises made to Fierro to restore his family, to give him more power as the Second-in-command, to find his brother and sister, to locate his fugitive daughter, to brush the murder of his wife under the carpet -- resurfacing and slapping him in the face, Fierro sighed. "I've become nothing but an ornament at the right hand. Second-in-Command just means I'm on the backburner until someone offs him or he becomes unavailable for some bill that needs signing. It's ridiculous. Boy, I've lost a lot because of his rise to power, and I will do anything to stop him from continuing his reign of terror."
A beat of silence let the words Fierro spoke sink in, as far from profound and as angsty as they might have sounded. He wasn't looking for pity from the boy, just an understanding of what Williams' reign had done to not only his life, but the lives of many others, surely. Still, Fierro maintained a firm countenance, one that looked as hard as stone, when in reality it was broken and just fragile over this entire ordeal.
Then, there was a couple of knocks at the door, and the almost inaudible squeak of the front door opening. Fierro instinctively yanked his wand and flicked it toward the foyer. "Lumos." He whispered, lighting it to a dim glow at the tip. It didn't take him but a second to realize who it was, and hopefully he wouldn't have taken this as an attack. "So nice of you to finally join us. I was just having a little chat with Mr. Bristow. Getting acquainted, and all that."

"I suspect Williams believes me to be loyal and trustworthy, when I am nothing of the sort when it comes to his seat in power."
That statement alone made the alleged Kevin want to do nothing more than laugh, but unfortunately, laughing would require explanation, and that explanation was not one he could give. After all, how realistic was it to expect to be able to tell someone who's part of a group whom you spied on before and that has been trying to kill you and your family for years and believed they succeeded that he was really that same man and expect them not to try to finish the job in one way or another? Not very. This one might see him as a way to gain assurance that Trevor believed he was loyal by turning him in. The other? Well, who knew what that one would do. He wasn't exactly on the up and up with Trevor. He'd gathered that much over the past few months, but he didn't know quite what that would mean for him if Callid found out the truth of his identity.
Of course, thinking too long and too hard on this topic wouldn't be beneficial right now. He knew how to lie, knew how to cover his tracks, but he needed to pay attention to what Fierro was saying. Otherwise, he couldn't keep up conversation and would therefore seem disinterested, which wasn't what he wanted. He needed their input and their ideas. That was all he was here for, to use them, dispose of Trevor himself, if they proved too slow, and get out of the country with his son. So, Casey continued to listen to Fierro's story of how Trevor apparently wronged him and caused him to lose so much. He took it with a grain of salt. Perspectives varied, and depending on whether or not Fierro was power hungry, he could easily manipulate the truth to be what he wanted.
Just as Casey was trying to think of the right thing to reply with, however, none other than their tardy "friend" Callid Warren walked in, providing the perfect way to not have to worry about a response to Fierro. "What kept you?" he asked. It was a valid question. A secret meeting to plan the downfall of one's supposed enemy, and he was late. It was odd, he thought. While he was certain Warren was against Williams, he still didn't think the man would want to be late and miss out in getting his thoughts heard and plans shared or to even merely glean ideas from them.
((Sorry, Casey muse kind of went south towards the end.))

Fierro was not done questioning the boy, in fact, he had only just begun. But there were some questions he felt needed to be asked in private, between the two of them only, so he unfortunately had to wait, as sick of the waiting as he was. "Yes, Warren. How nice of you to finally appear."
And in an instant, the foyer and living room of Viridian Manor was lit up by the fireplace, several candles, a couple of chandeliers and other lighting fixtures and sconces mounted along the walls. The three allies were now in a well-lit room, smelling of a sweet, relaxing aroma of burning wood, calmed by the crackling of the fire as it rose slightly to Fierro's liking. He was a host, after all, and with the meeting finally coming together, he figured they would need this well lit room to reveal any glances of agreeance, truth, or even doubt or regret.
"Now that we're all here, finally..." Fierro arched a brow at the newly arrived guest with a bit of curiosity, but still gestured grandly at the next area, "let us reconvene in a more appropriate scene."
There was a table in the dining room, one room over from where he and Kevin Bristow had previously convened, a fresh black tablecloth thrown over the mahogany. Six chairs encircled the former eating area, serving now as a location for their coup, their war council, rather than a place to dine, as it was apparently absent of fine china and silverware, but in its place a large, nearly full bottle of scotch and empty crystal tumblers, and a plate of scones sitting in the middle. Fierro rarely had guests at Viridian Manor anymore, but he was still the host.
There was a stack of papers sitting in the place setting at the head chair, the seat Fierro took his place at once. He did not sit immediately, no, he waited until the two arrived before calling the meeting at its official time. If it was anything he knew how to do it was take note of a meeting, something he had to do for Trevor many-a-time, a skill he was not going to shake so easily. He glanced down at the papers stacked here and made a mental picture of them: files and notes jotted on the Williams regime in his time serving them, his own personal notes and agenda, and a few blank sheets he would be jotting some notes on his new..."friends". This was the first time anyone has ever interested him so much, it took two very unusual alliances with the most unusual people he would have ever thought, a guard, and his boss' mortal enemy. Unusual? Indeed.
"Forgive much of the dust, Viridian Manor has not been seen by outsider eyes since...well, since Trevor sent two guards to 'check' on me." As they were all men in the room, Fierro was sure his guests would not mind the dust, in fact they might have ignored it, if he hadn't said anything. But perfection was one of his idiosyncracies, it was a habit to apologize when something was not up to par. "Still, that should not bother tonight's meeting at all. Do let me know if you two need anything, and help yourselves to any refreshments."
Fierro hated serving people, especially young and able ones like these two in his own home, but they were guests nonetheless and he was going to cater to the needs of his allies. As they say, friends with common enemies are to be kept as close as possible, and that was his goal, at least for now.
