"You did what?"
Kyle had finally made it back to the manor and checked in with Damien. As expected, Damien was lecturing him full-throttle.
"Kyle, how could you talk to her? And you gave her your address!? What if Williams finds out? He'll put you on the top of his hit list and then..."
"Damien, calm down. You worry too much. I haven't done anything to anger Williams and I only want to help Evie remember who she is." He didn't need to be talked to like this. He wasn't a child. He knew the difference between right and wrong and he knew how to judge consequences.
"You know very well that you don't need to do anything to anger Williams. He'd kill you just because he didn't like your face. And you know how lucky you are not to be on the 'wanted list' as it is. I didn't even want you to go in for that interrogation session they made you take. You have too many ties to me and to the Order to be doing things like this."
"So what? I just sit here and hope everything resolves itself in the outside world? Or that the few people the Order has out there manage to defeat Williams by themselves? I'm sorry, but it just won't work that way." He was tired of running trips for the safehouse, tired of just sitting around waiting for news. It just felt like they should be doing more... anything more.
"Look, Kyle... I know your tired of this. We all are. But we have to get our priorities straight. We have to help those in need and obtain all the information and support we can..."
"It's been two years! How much longer are we supposed to wait?" Kyle replied, his annoyance getting the better of him. It was very out of character for him and indeed Damien seemed to be a little stunned by his outburst.
"How do you think I feel, Kyle? I'm entirely trapped in the place just like almost everyone else, and yet I'm supposed to be the head of an organization plotting to take down Williams and at the same time run a community? I work hard to make sure everything is in line, and I can guarantee you that our patience will not go unrewarded. Now I can understand that you want to help Evie, and that you're still hurting from Casey's death but..."
"What?" Kyle said, cutting him off. "Casey and Evie have nothing to do with it. I just want to feel like I'm doing something more useful." Who was he to try and determine how he felt? To try and understand him? He didn't need condolences or pity. He just wanted to help.
"You don't seem to understand how useful you really are to us Kyle. None of this at all would have been possible if not for you. We need you Kyle."
"Well I need to feel like I'm doing something other than hiding. I'm going to start trying to find ways to fight back." There, he said it. It affirmed it not only to Damien but himself. He didn't know how but he was going to something more than just random supply trips.
"I can't let you Kyle. There's a very good chance that Williams will have you followed, and if that happens they could find the safehouse."
"Are you trying to tell me what I can and can't do?" It almost felt like an insult. He wasn't stupid enough to let somebody follow him. He looked on as Damien sighed.
"What I'm saying is that if you leave, you won't be returning to the safehouse."
Kyle's stomach dropped a little. So that was what it had come to... Did he think that it would stop him? Did he think that he couldn't take care of himself? "Fine"
"Kyle, don't let your emotions get the better of you."
Kyle turned back around, having began to leave Damien's office. "You of all people should know that I don't do that. It's entirely rational: If sitting around waiting doesn't work, then try something else." He turned back around and went to the door. As he opened it he muttered, "I'll keep in touch," before gently slamming the door behind him. From the other side he heard 'Kyle wait', but he didn't stop.
He was now acting a little faster than his mind could keep up. He was headed to his room to pack up some clothes when it suddenly hit him: Bridget. He knew she would never let him do this, but he had to tell her. He felt guilty all of a sudden and wished things didn't have to be this way. Unfortunately they were; not because of Kyle, but ultimately because of Williams. One way or another, Kyle was going to make sure Williams paid. After packing up a few of his things, he began a slow, arduous trip to Bridget's room...
