The overgrown weeds and tall grass gave the house a eerie feel to it, every window had been broken out by rocks thrown by the children that had crossed its path they were all boarded up, the roof was starting to cave in and the old barn in the back looked like the slightest wind would knock the old structure over. It was not a very inviting place but it was the perfect place for Evie’s plans. She had spent the greater part of the last week apparating all over the London country side in search of a old building that was far enough from the general population and wouldn’t alert anyone to the dealings going on inside.
It would need to be fixed up no doubt to make it safe for anyone that went inside and cleaned from whatever had made the abandoned house its home over the years but that was something a little magic wouldn’t fix. A few spells here and there and it would be good enough to serve as a meeting place and the more people she could get involved in her project the more the house could be fixed for anyone trying to escape, giving them a safe place to stay until they were free.
Evie hated doing all this behind Trevor’s back, she really did but it was for his own protection and hers. She couldn’t put her finger on it but something about him said he wasn’t as passionate about this as she was, she felt like he was only agreeing to do what little he was just to make her happy. Well, that was fine but she wasn’t going to sit around and wait for him and the others to agree to abolish slavery, things never got done that way and history proved that. The only way to get rid of something like this was war…and while Evie didn’t want a war she just wasn’t going to sit around and wait, you had to take matters into your own hands.
The woman walked around the perimeter of the old house and peered inside between the gaps in the wooden planks around the windows. Ick, it was defiantly filthy and needed a lot of work but nothing could ever be perfect. If everything was perfect she wouldn’t have to do this at all and the world would be at peace and there would be no problems and the Order and Casey never would have happened. It kind of bothered her that she shared an ideal with the Order, at least she thought she did but it didn’t matter who you were and what you believe in, slavery was wrong.
Evie stepped away from the window and walked around to the porch. Evie put her foot on the first step and tested to make sure it could hold her weight before she stepped onto it and repeated the process with the rest of them until she was standing in front of the boarded up door. Evie took in a deep breath and grabbed either side of one plank of wood and started to pull, putting all her weight into trying to get the thing to give….and it did, but, instead of just stumbling back Evie stumbled off the porch and feel to the ground below, landing flat on her back. Bugger! she said rather loudly, trying to get air back into her lungs. She landed so hard that she knocked the wind out of her. Carefully she pushed herself up and stood there, bending over and putting her hands on her knees and taking a few deep breaths to get the air flow back but looked up when she thought she heard something.
