Lance was not about to allow himself to be baited into defending himself. He saw no point in pettily saying, "I fought for what I believed in." It didn't matter in the long run because she clearly had her own sense of morals, and he was in no mood for a philosophical debate. It would get neither of them further in the long run since they were both obviously set in their own sense of right and wrong, and Lance recognized that. This was where the lack of absolute morals posed problems. One could argue that something is right so long as it causes no harm to any other person, but how could that person be so certain it was right? What if not doing something caused some sort of harm emotionally to the person who wanted to do whatever, whether it be yell at someone or be rude or whatever? If someone said that societal standards were what one could rely on to determine right and wrong, what about the Middle East? Was it right that women had no voice to speak out if something was done to them by a man? Societal standards varied. There were no absolutes, and why should a traveler passing through be forced to adhere to the rules of a certain other society? Absolutes were necessary but none truly existed except to most members within any given society. Back to the original argument, what made the "victim's" rights and feelings any more important than the one "victimizing" the other? So no, a philosophical debate was not something that he wanted to get into.
"Annabelle stood for what she believed was right; they stood for what they believed was right. An outcome was reached. Both knew the possible costs, and the 'winning' side was relieved to find they didn't receive the worst possible. Why not move on? Revenge becomes a meaningless lifestyle, but Miss Lefcourt, I can already see you have your mind made up and nothing I can say is going to change your mind and send you back to Japan. I just hope you know what you're doing and how to go about things without incriminating yourself. As it is, I have some things I need to get done. It's almost time for those of us still stuck inside the castle to return. Have a nice life." With that, Lance rose from his seat, putting some money down to cover the costs of what they had had and a little more for a tip. She could ask for the bill whenever she was ready. He could care less. Rika Lefcourt had done nothing to change his opinion of her. He just honestly hoped that she went about this in a smart fashion whatever she decided to do.
