Despite the bright afternoon sun shining down on the grounds, the temperature was still downright cold, but that didn't seem to bother the small girl running happily through the snow, oblivious to the worries that faced her mother, who was following at a more sedate pace.
"Look, Momma! I'm a angel!" the little girl called out to her mother, flopping down in the snow to make a snow-angel. Her mother smiled and watched her, her eyes misting over a bit as she did, thinking about the father that should be here with his little red-haired angel. Watching her daughter play in the snow, the mother realized just how much the girl looked like her father, from the fiery red hair to the cute button nose to the bright blue eyes that sparkled with delight as she rolled in the powdery snow. It just wasn't fair that she would never remember the father she looked so much like, her mother thought sadly. Just another sad thing in this world of sad things...
As the little girl came running up to her mother, Elena hastily wiped the tears from her eyes so her daughter wouldn't see. Picking her daughter up, Elena spun around with her, Michelle squealing with delight. As her mother put her down again, Michelle said, "Momma, can I go find Granny? She promised to read to me after lunch."
Elena smiled and answered, "Sure, angel. Just be quiet going through the house. You don't want to disturb anyone else." Squatting down to give the little girl a kiss on the head, she patted her butt off toward the house and turned back to the pond. As she watched a family of ducks skitter across the iced-over pond, Michelle's voice drifted back to her before she heard the door shut behind her.
