On a night like this, one would never think to search outside to find someone, which was exactly why Lily was out here. Cold rain and heavy winds lashed everything in its path, making the waters of the lake churn and froth angrily and the trees in the Forbidden Forest sway and bend violently. Most of the students and professors would be a dinner at this hour, but Lily just wanted to be alone for a while. She was still nursing bruised (or broken, she wasn't sure) ribs, and eating was just painful at the moment, so she had decided to wander the grounds. Away from prying eyes and ears, Lily was safe to let her guard down to cry over her injuries and use her anger to plot her revenge on her uncle for the pain he caused her. So far, she hadn't been able to come up with much.
As far as she could tell, Lily was helpless against her uncle. He was the Head Unspeakable in the Department of Mysteries, and there was nothing Lily could do to him, short of killing him, but that would just get too messy. And then of course, there was the whole being charged with murder and going to Azkaban for the rest of her life thing as well, and her uncle wasn't worth ruining her life over. But Lily felt she had to do something soon. During the past weekend alone, when he had encountered her in Hogsmeade, dear Uncle Lionel had caused more damage to Lily than he had in the last six months, and it was getting more and more difficult to hide from the rest of the world. In fact, Diana had asked her just yesterday why she hadn't been sleeping or eating much since last weekend. Lily had given her some bull story about allergies keeping her up at night and taking away her appetite, but she didn't think her friend really bought it. Lily knew it was only a matter of time before one of her friends decided to confront her about her intermittent odd behaviors or put the facts together themselves, and that was a risk she couldn't afford to take. She knew for a fact her uncle would kill her and anyone else who knew without hesitation to protect his own reputation and status.
Years ago she had decided she would take her revenge on her uncle any way she could. Joining the Imperium Guard and learning to defend herself, etc seemed like the best option for her plan so far. Then, knowing how to defend herself, she could provoke her uncle into attacking her and kill him in self-defense, ending all her problems and avenging herself on her abuser all in one fell swoop. The problem with that plan was that at the rate her uncle was beating her, Lily wouldn't be fit to take the admission test for the Guard when she graduated. And that wasn't an option. Joining the Guard was the only reasonable plan she had been able to come up with for revenge, and she wasn't going to let her uncle or anyone else stand in her way.
So in the midst of the driving rain, Lily sat near the edge of the Black Lake, an impermeability charm keeping her dry and the wind at bay. She was determined to come up with some kind of plan, but so far had only succeeded in realizing how much her ribs hurt her. "damn cowardly bastard," she muttered angrily to herself in German, referring to her uncle. Holding her ribs gently and moving gingerly, Lily stood and paced slowly along the edge of the lake, watching the churning water and hoping a stroke of brilliance would come to her.
