It was her lunch break at St. Mungo's, so Katya had decided to drop in on her father; and after coming through the floo to the private offices, she had discovered that he was (true to form) in a meeting, Sienna with him. So she'd wandered around, gotten lost, stood staring a long time at a portrait of Henry Lavallin Puxley and his curly-haired daughter, and then finally found herself following her nose down a stairwell into the kitchen.
There were few people within; presumably the rest were manning the employee lunch buffet upstairs. As she entered the dour-faced inhabitants glanced up, lowered their heads, and then took a double take. That was a common reaction. Her novelty was thankfully beginning to fade, but it hadn't altogether disappeared; and so she bore the brunt of ill-deserved fame. Countless people seemed to care what she thought, how she dressed, and where she had coffee with whom; and yet very few seemed willing to actually interact with her honestly. She'd been in England for months, and still had made no friends her own age.
"Hello," She said, waving to get their attention. The three uniformed, worn-looking employees straightened from their work. "I was wondering if I could beg some cookies, maybe some milk..." She said, trailing off. What an odd lot. They looked like a group of zombies. Furthermore, she didn't see a single brush working of its own accord on a pot or floating spice rack. Were they all squibs?
Her face fell as the realization hit home: these were slaves. Slaves. The word echoed around in her head. People, wizards and witches, removed of magic and all rights...
She didn't know what to do with the knowledge, only stood and stared with mouth slightly agape.
