Persis stepped into the bookshop and sniffed the air around her. It smelled strongly of paper, glue, ink, and other book-related scents, but Persis fancied that there was another scent as well: that of knowledge and things to learn. It intrigued her, for she liked to learn, even though it was not her greatest talent. She would've been placed in Ravenclaw at school, if it had been, but as it was she was in Slytherin, where those of great ambition were placed.
Not so much ambition as just wanting to be seen, Persis thought for the thousandth time, To just be seen for me... that would satisfy me, I think.... But for now, I'll stick with learning! She moved determinedly among the shelves, scanning for an interesting title. She turned a corner and nearly bumped into someone, and she looked up, stopping just short of the person. "Oh, pardon me," she murmured, "I didn't see you..." She examined the person's face closely, realizing that she vaguely knew the young man before her. "Wait, I know you... you're in my House, aren't you?"

He had been spending more and more time in the bookstore of late, preferring its comforting solitude to the dead quiet of home. At least here he had shelves upon shelves of books to keep himself occupied. He was currently returning a history book back to its place on a dusty shelf when he was nearly plowed into by someone who had come around the corner. Since he thought he was the only one in the bookstore at the moment Subaru started slightly at the unexpected intrusion. He was about to snap at the poor girl when she spoke up first. Fellow Slytherin? She must be a year or two younger then. Now that he thought about she did seem vaguely familiar. She didn't play quidditch, that much was sure so he figured they may have spoken an odd word or two to each other in passing.
"Yes I am of the Slytherin house, Takahashi Subaru. And you are?" he asked in a quiet yet thoughtful tone. Eying the girl curiously he held out his hand in a friendly gesture. Just cause he was a loner didn't mean he wouldn't treat a fellow Slytherin with a modicum of respect.
"Oh..." Persis hadn't been expecting such a polite reply to her query. It took her aback slightly, but she managed to recover before she looked like an idiot. "I'm Persis, Persis Rhodes," she answered almost shyly, taking the young man's offered hand, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Takahashi Subaru." She paused, trying to figure out a way to phrase her question so that she wouldn't sound rude.
"I'm terribly sorry, but I'm not sure I know enough about Japanese culture to know if Takahashi is really your given name or if Subaru is." She blushed in shame for having to ask the question at all. "If it was Persian culture I'd know perfectly well," she added hastely, to show him that she really wasn't stupid, "But in this case.... I'm afraid I'm a bit out of the range of my experience."
OOC: When Persis says Persian, she means Iranian. The name of Persia was changed to Iran in 1979 (I think, anyway), but wizards still call it Persia (or in my head they do!).

He raised an eyebrow at her curiously phrased question. Well the girl had some tact he had to grudgingly admit. Most people didn't try to tip toe around the issue of his name, they usually just used what they thought would be correct or didn;t use it at all. He smirked.
"Ah sorry, hard habit to break. My given name is Subaru, the family name is Takahashi." He turned back to the shelf he was browsing earlier and after a few moments, selected a book on Dark Arts. He was no good in social situations, the whole thing just left him with an awkward feeling. Striking up and keeping on with conversations had never been his forte. He was thinking about just leaving and going back to the corner he was currently hiding in, when something the Persis had said stuck a chord in him. "You know of Persian culture? Have you ever been there?" Subaru was generally curious now. He knew next to nothing about that area of the world other then what his grandparents had told him, which was not much. What better way to gain knowledge on the subject then to have an 'expert' explain it to you.
"Persian culture?" Persis smiled, finally sure that her conversation was on firm ground. "I know a great deal about it; I was born there. My mother is Persian, you see. My father is British, though: that's why I don't really look like I'm from there."
She realized she was babbling and hastely stopped, shifting the subject to be about Subaru. "You said it's a habit to put your family name first.... did you just move recently from Japan?"She glanced at the book that Subaru was holding. "And do you have an interest in the Dark Arts? I'm rather curious about defending against them; I can't wait until school starts, since I'm going to be in fifth year, and I hear they start to teach about Patronuses then."

Subaru nodded in understanding when Persis explained that her mother was Persian and her father British. From the way she described herself he thought she must have more of her fathers blood in her. Interesting. He was momentarily taken back when she directed the conversation back to him. It's not something he was used to, most people tended to ignore him unless they wanted something, or if the quidditch team needed him someplace on time. What an odd girl.
"No," he replied to her question, "I have been here 6 years. Father moved me here from Tottori when I was 10. And yes, as custom back home we introduce ourselves with the family name first." He honestly didn't like where this was headed and he thanked every god that could listen when she spied the Dark Arts book he was holding. that was something he'd be willing to talk about, for a bit anyway. "Dark Arts has always interested me, I'm slated to learn them this year at Hogwarts, and you if you are fifth year will get to learn Patronus'."
Persis smiled widely, something she almost never allowed herself to do. "Excellent!" she answered happily, "I can't wait to see what mine is!" She was preparing to continue with this thread of conversation when she spotted the uneasy look on Subaru's face. She was instantly serious again, not to mention nervous.
"I'm sorry; I'm babbling, aren't I?" she asked quietly, "And I don't even know you well... I'm sorry. If I'm annoying you, I can leave, if you'd like. Or at least change the subject. What do you like to talk about? Wait, I'm doing it again..... So what would you prefer, Master Takahashi?" She waited for Subaru's answer with no samll amount of trepidation; she was actually enjoying talking to the Japanese boy, and she hoped that he wouldn't send her away.

He blinked a couple times before looking at Persis with a thoroughly confused expression. Master Takahashi? Well he'd never been called that before and he wasn't quite sure what to make of it. "I..uh....just Subaru is fine..." he stuttered, slightly embarrassed at the state her comment put him in. It wasn't often things happened so....unexpected.
"Please, you don't have to leave, I just...I'm not good in these types of situations." Well that was awkward wasn't it? Common ground, he needed to steer them back to common ground. She was excited about patronus' right? Maybe he could start there? He tucked his book under his arm comfortably before motioning Persis to follow. If he was going to be forced to chat then at least they could do it in the comfort of the chairs in the back corner. "So, any idea as to what your patronus could be? Mine was a wolf."
Persis followed Subaru, nervous yet curious about this young man who seemed as bemused by her as she was by him. She took a seat in the huge, overly-padded chair beside his; she looked smaller than ever in it, so she tucked her feet up under her so that at least Subaru wouldn't see the fact that her feet couldn't touch the ground.
"I honestly don't know," she answered his question, "I've been told eveything from a slug to a beetle, but my parents say that I will have something grander, more inspiring." She blushed, hoping Subaru wouldn't think she was bragging. "I'm just hoping it's not a slug...."

He chuckled slightly when she mentioned her fear that her patronus could end up being a slug. Now that, he mused, would be unfortunate. He let himself flop back into his chair, the familiarness of it made him feel more at ease with his new companion. Mah, I don't think you'll be a slug, you are too... what's the word....energetic. He quirked a small grin, if you could even call it that. Yes this Slytherin was turning out to be quite interesting. "So anything else you are looking forward to this year?"
Persis sat up slightly, recognising an opportunity before her. She had remembered that Subaru was on the Quidditch team, a fact that made her both jealous of him and hopeful for his help.
"Yes, actually," she answered shyly, "I.... well, I was hoping to be allowed to try out for Quidditch this year. They haven't let me before this, because..." She stopped herself before she accidentally told Subaru more about herself than she wanted him to know. Her blood status was not something she wanted to discuss. "Well, they just wouldn't," she said a little lamely, "But I've wanted to since I started at Hogwarts. I play Chaser, you see."

His eyebrow rose slightly when she hinted she was actually looking forward to something next year. He was surprised and excited when she let on that she wanted to play Quidditch. Now that was a topic he felt he could talk about for a while. He didn't know what to think when she mentioned she was never aloud to try out before. If someone thought they had the skill then why wouldn't they be aloud to try out? He looked her over when she mentioned she would try for chaser. She was small, but that would be alright as it would allow for more maneuverability and speed.
"Why would they not let you try before? If it's because you are too small I will personally take my broom and break it over the captains thick skull." The thought that because she was small, she shouldn't be aloud to play irked him to no end. And if by some chance it happened to be due to blood, well that was an issue he himself was extremely bitter about, being half-blood and all. "So how long have you played chaser? If you want to try bad enough I'll put in a word for you. We need a few good chasers."
Persis blushed again, but this time with pleasure. Subaru seemed to genuinely want to help her get on the Quidditch team, a fact that made her heart feel incredibly light, as if she was flying already.
"I've played since I was 8," she answered eagerly, "There was a league in Persia that I was allowed to play on." She paused, then decided to tell Subaru about her trouble. "I'm considered a pureblood there, you see," she went on quietly, "But here I'm seen for what I actually am: a three-quarter blood. When I started at Hogwarts, they told me I wouldn't be allowed to do things like Quidditch, even though I'd been playing for years. I'm good, too, but.... that didn't matter. So I haven't tried since. I figured they'd just stop me."

"If they spent half as much time worrying about making a good team as they did on blood status Slytherin would be unbeatable." he stated matter of factly, surprised again by the fact that she would openly tell him her blood status. He was no stranger to the blood issues plaguing Hogwarts, not that he openly told anyone his status. That was something however that wasn't going to hold him back from anything. "They won't ask you if you come to try, they just assume that anyone less then pure isn't stupid enough to show up. And if they do harass you about it, well...lets just say your blood is more pure then mine." He sighed. "At any rate just get to the pitch and let your skill do the talking. perhaps we can go out before tryouts and see what you can do."
"I'd like that," Persis answered eagerly, "Flying is my favorite thing in all the world; it's been hard to watch everyone play while I can't." She glanced at Subaru, hoping she wouldn't upset him with her next comment. "Actually, when I saw you play, I was rather jealous of you, too. And.... actually.... I'm even more so now that I know you have to same problem as me, and yet you've overcome it.
"But I'm not mad at you, and I'd still like to be your friend," she added hastely, "That is, if you don't mind me trying to be so...."
