August 10th, 12:30pm
Gemma arrived a full half an hour early to Sofi's 17th birthday party. She hadn't really been sure if she should or not, but then she'd begun to wonder whether or not the Steels would need help setting up or not. Besides, if she went early, she could be there when everyone else arrived, and then having to meet everyone wouldn't be as scary...
Not that she would have to meet everyone that was coming for the first time. Orion had told her that he had been invited, too, a fact that had both surprised and pleased Gemma. They hadn't actually seen each other since the gala, due to Gemma's family deciding that it would be a good idea to impose strict rules on when Gemma could go out. This had irritated her, but she had stuck by what they wanted of her, just to show that she could. Also, school was starting soon enough, and then she'd get to see Orion every day. She couldn't wait....
Anyway, she thought, trying to convince Eclipse to go into his carrier, I don't think Sofi will mind.... A few minutes later, after more careful pleading with her cat, she Apperated to the Steel residence, making sure to place herself behind a large bush she knew to be in the front yard. Going up to the door, she knocked softly then stepped back.
A few seconds later, the door opened, revealing Sofi, who was wearing a large grin and a very interesting, though very flattering, outfit.
"Hey! Gem! Good to see ya!" The dark-skinned girl stepped out onto the porch and gave Gemma a hug. Gemma returned it promptly, smiling as well.
"Hello, Sofi," she replied, "Happy Birthday! You look very nice... any particular reason why you're dressed like that?" She smirked at Sofi, then went on. "I brought Eclipse, as per your request..." She held up the cat carrier, where Eclipse was making a little sound of irritation at his imprisonment. Sofi grinned even wider.
"Aw... poor kitty.... c'mon inside, yeah?" She gestured for Gemma to follow her; Gemma did so, carefully stepping out of her ballet flat shoes once she was inside. "And yeah, I gotta reason.... same as you, eh? Wanting to look nice for your boy? You do look nice, too, Gem... not everyone can wear a top like that, or skinny jeans, but you can wear anything, I swear..."
Sofi led the way through the living room and into the kitchen, where a blond young man about three inches taller than Gemma was carefully slicing vegetables. "Hey, that's right, you don't know, Lex, do ya, Gem?" Sofi added, noting Gemma's slightly surprised and panicked expression. Gemma shook her head, watching the boy as he set down his knife and turned around. "Itsake, he doesn't bite... do ya, Lex?"
The young man shook his head, laughing softly.
"No, I don't," he answered, wiping his hands off on a towel before holding his right one out to Gemma, "Alexi Antonovitch Martinov, at your service. I'm a... a friend of the family; I'm staying with them for a while." Something in his tone made Gemma want to watch him even more carefully, but she cautiously shook his hand, careful to let it go after only about two seconds. She had no wish to have a repeat of what had happened a few weeks before.
"Gemma Winston. Nice to meet you," she replied softly. The young man, Alexi, nodded and smiled, but he didn't seem affected by her, not on the surface, at least.
"So, Gem, you can help us set up, then," Sofi suggested. Gemma nodded, smiling again, and set down Eclipse's cage, letting him out and watching him jump out and up onto the table to purr loudly before turning back to Sofi.
"Where do you need my help?"
