wednesday, december 21st | approximately 10:00 p.m.The necklace was beautiful, and she had half a mind to steal it. It dangled from the blonde woman’s neck, a shiny trinket that distracted from the stranger’s poorly matched foundation and uneven eyeliner. Of course, she didn’t need to have terrible makeup for her date to spend half of their conversations with his eyes glued to her chest. It didn’t help that the diamond and topaz pendent hung in just the ideal location for him to notice. It was almost laughable as the couple stood up from their seats and left the theater, probably on a second date. He wasn’t really interested in anything besides her physical features, but their conversations were a little deeper than two people who had just met. If only she acknowledged his wandering gaze, then he would have to say something other than he was simply admiring her necklace.
A closed-lip smile adorned the brunette’s face.
The couple meandered down the sidewalk, talking exaggeratedly. Oh, the woman was really trying, she was. She was laughing at all of the man’s jokes, and nearly falling over herself with enthusiasm. They continued to move, before they reached an intersection. There was some sort of stumbled apology about living or parking in different directions, before the pair split up. The man went down the direction of the main road, probably heading for the metro. The woman made a much more foolish decision, her necklace bouncing along with each step as he headed for a nearby alleyway. It was just a shortcut, she likely told herself, as if that could justify it. Humans. They were so predictable. When would they ever learn?
“Muffliato.” Her voice was soft as she slid into the alley. Her obsidian cloak billowed around her as she spun on the heels of her boots. Her wand was still in her hand, though she doubted she would need it any more. No, the next stage was easy, especially with the thirst that clawed at her throat. A smile still adorned her reddened lips. Poppy Addams was on the hunt, though not for very much longer. She had spied the couple earlier, when the shiny pendent caught her eye. She wouldn’t take it, but oh, how she was tempted to.
The woman up ahead sped up, sensing that something made her uneasy. Perhaps it was the lack of noise in the alley, as if she was in her own world, or maybe it was something else. She pulled her jumper closer to her, folding her arms across her stomach. The blonde woman even stopped, turning to look behind her, but there was no one there. She laughed weakly, trying to reassure herself that her imagination was getting with best of her. There wasn’t another human in the alley. When she turned back around, her breath caught in her throat, shortly before it was ripped out. The scream died upon her lips before even forming, and she slumped backwards against the brick. Her eyes were still wide with shock and horror. The necklace hung limply against her neck, and the dark-haired woman brushed her finger against the design, the new smile revealing the fangs behind her lips.
Fifteen minutes later, Poppy slid the hood back from her face. The remnants of blood had vanished from her face, and with them, her thirst. She brushed her fingers over the edge of the bar as she slid into a stool, eying up the crowd. She always seemed to find the most interesting sorts of people in the Snake Pit. Perhaps tonight would prove to be the same. After all, she would no longer be tempted to steal the life force of a stranger, not this night. The edge from a recent meal still remained, reminding her that it would still be a couple of days before the need became unbearable again. Her coal-rimmed eyes took in everything she could see as she applied a coat of bright red lipstick, allowing the sound and atmosphere of the dingy place to consume her for a moment.
Maybe she should have taken the necklace.
The woman wouldn’t have need for it anymore, anyways.
