Of course her first question would be one he didn’t really have an answer to. The Captain didn’t know any details behind her incarceration. All he had been told was to go and make sure that prisoner 253 was released. He held her gaze, wanting to both look away yet not and was very aware that she still held onto his arms. ”I honestly don’t know Kara. I wasn’t told. I didn’t even know it was you I was coming to release. The order came from Williams, and the department head sent me. My guess is it was to make sure it got done as soon as possible…”
His answer was unsatisfactory to his own ears and he wished he could give her more. ”I won’t let you go, I promise. And you should know I’ve never been on board with the way Auror or Imperium Guard, treated those being released. Most forget that you guys are still human too and the transition from here to out there is usually quite the shock. I may be seen as being soft for it but I can’t just throw people into that, former criminal or not. It’s probably why they keep me away from here. Soft hearts aren’t meant to be around… and this,” he motioned around the room, ”is the only thing I can really do…”
The questions rolled off her tongue, random and rapid. And they tugged at his heart strings. She had been through so much; much more than any one person by rights should have. ”No, you can’t return to the safe house. Kara you need to listen to me. They are going to put a tracking device on you, it’s in the terms of your release… I don’t know why but if you return to the safe house they will follow you… I’ll help you, find you a place to stay for the time being… I’ll send word to you father so he’ll know. Jonathan has returned home… and Liam,” He didn’t know how to make this any less complicated for her, but it was best she heard it now and from him, rather than some article in the Prophet. He'd heard the rumers, he just hadn't' associated the killer with her, something he refused to believe was true. ”Kara, Liam’s dead…”
She seemed only then to remember something and her whimper caused his heart to break. It was times like these he truly realized he was caught between a rock and a hard place. Markus wanted nothing more to end the atrocities of the current regime for everything they had done/were doing but at the same time he also knew that he was just as responsible. He made the arrests, sent innocent people to their deaths or worse… The Captain again pulled Kara into a tight embrace when she seemed to be on the verge of panicking. ”Oh what have I done? Markus, what have I done?!”
”Kara it’s not your fault. You couldn’t have done what everyone says. It’s not you! You loved the man. There has to be some sort of explanation, you had to have been framed. The Kara I know wouldn’t, couldn’t do that to the people she loved. It’ll be ok, you’ll see. You can make it through this, and we’ll find out the truth. I’m here for you, and I won’t let you go through this alone… I promise. ” He didn’t know what more he could tell her, what more he could do for her until they were far, far away from this place. But he would help her get through this. He wouldn’t let her become another statistic, another life the regime had destroyed. He refused to let that happen!
