Emmeline leaned against the wall in a dark corner of the alley. She took a deep breath trying to summon all of her Gryffindor bravery. She been doing this for about a good fifteen minutes now with minimal success. One thing she had managed to do was ignore the fact that her left cheek was still stinging from being back handed. She had come to Diagon Alley in search of a new book or two as her aunt was tired of her hovering about the house and trying to find a way to make her father pay. However, since her father had stumbled upon her at Diagon Alley while she was wearing a rather short black skirt and swayed side to side with every step as well as a jumper of a deep bloody red color and flats to match her jumper. This had not pleased him at all. He thought she should have at least been wearing some robes over it. She wasn't the biggest fan of robes as she found them stifling and this had lead to an argument and he'd backhanded her. His last words still still hung in her ears.
If you ever want to be worthy of the name River, you'd better straighten up.
"I hate that man." Emmeline pushed off the wall and ran a hand through her wavy blonde locks. She turned back on the street and strode down a ways to Florish and Blott's, where she had originally been heading. Her feet pad along the stone ground. It seemed quieter than it usually was in the alley. Maybe it was because she was there towards the evening or maybe it was some unknown reason. She didn't get it much thought and she opened the door to the shop and entered. Giving a polite smile to the man behind the counter, she headed back towards the transfigurations books. She ran her fingers along the spines having no clue that a bruise was slowly forming around her left eyes, where she'd been hit.
