PET PEEVE: “Emperor’s New Clothes” Syndrome: when someone pretends to know or feel a certain way about something in order to fit a certain image
STRENGTHS:
• Duelling. Katya is a fierce and highly talented duellist. When she duels, she goes into a “zone” of concentration, in which her entire being breaks down into a brain connected to a hand connected to a wand, and that brain thinks of nothing but a way to incapacitate her opponent. She was at the top of her game in Durmstrang, and even got in a little trouble sneaking some underground, less-than-honourable duelling into her repertoire.
• Metamorphmagus. Like her father, Katya’s abilities ran a course of mayhem throughout her childhood. It was a course that Trey was hard-pressed to manage, though he did the very best he could. With the help of her father and a journal given to at controlling her metamorphmagi abilities.
• Multilingual. Katya grew up in Bulgaria, and so naturally her mother-tongue is Bulgarian. She also picked up verbal fluency in the Romanian and Romani languages. From her “father”/kidnapper, Trey, she learned to speak English.
WEAKNESSES:
• Physique. She is a very slight young woman, and would never hold up in hand-to-hand combat – though her nails and teeth would inevitably leave some very nasty scars.
TRAITS:
• Competitive. Challenges are answered in kind. If a challenger deals a dare in jest, then in jest it will be either taken or refused. Yet, if any seriousness exists within the challenge, Katya will go to any lengths and means in order to win undeniably, publicly, and at the greatest loss to her opponent.
• Composed. Even though she does have a bit of a temper, Katya’s most common mood is an airy sort of calm, and though she often seems to be out in the ethers not paying attention, she is always on her guard and watching closely.
• Deliberator. Katya will think and think and think on something, and in the end, although she will often come to a decision, will very rarely ever come to a conclusion. She trusts nothing to be as it appears, and she trusts no one to tell her the truth; even so, she is not bitter or cynical in these views. She thinks that, simply put, the natural state of Nature and all of her creatures is a state of deceit. It is survival, and she had no problem with that. As such, she refuses to set her beliefs in one single direction immovably, because such a thing would be foolish and nothing short of downright gullibility.
• Determined. She may be intellectually open, but ambition is not something that Katya lacks. She does not aim for Empress of the World, nor Richest, nor Most Admired; but whatever goal she sets, however big or small, will not be left be until it is thoroughly accomplished to her satisfaction. Most often, her goals centre around self improvement.
• Nurturing. So maybe she can be a bit harsh with those who cross her – she still has a softer side. She adores animals, especially of the small and fuzzy kind, and derives just as much pleasure from nurturing a sick kneazle kitten as from winning a duel.
• Proud. Katya feels in some misguided way – and she would never admit this – that she is superior to most others. When such an emotion manifests in her attitude or actions, it can tend toward estranging people. Having such pride and self-assurance also makes for a nasty temper when insulted.
• Ruthless. Her determination and competitiveness can often manifest into ruthlessness, which usually ends up getting her into heaps of trouble or causing self-injury. Thus far her worst scrapes have been relatively minor, but her spots show no sign of changing.

HISTORY:
Kiley Lynn Williams was born the twelfth of June, 1995, to newlyweds Anna and Trevor Williams. She was born with a full head of dark brown hair, which within the first few months of her life ran a course of colours all the way from black to blue to platinum blonde. The family took up residence in Germany, where her maternal grandparents lived. Although her father was often away at work, baby Kiley would squeal and hop around in excitement every time she saw his face, her little hands reaching to be held and played with. Her mother stayed at home and remained unemployed in order to care for the child, and even though she did not admire “stay-at-home-mom” status, was an excellent mother and wife. They were, overall, a happy little family.
Kiley was two and a half years old on Christmas of 1997. Kiley received from her father a little stuffed bear that would occasionally wink and giggle, and it was her favourite toy. For the next two days she and the little bear would not part – but soon, Kiley would be parted from everything she knew. On December 27, while Trevor was away at work, an intruder murdered Anna and took young Kiley from her room, leaving just the bear (which would no longer wink and giggle) where she should have been.
Trey Hunter, former best friend of her father, became her sole protector. He spirited Kiley away from Bulgaria and forged adoption papers, naming her as “Katerina Hunter”, the daughter of an English teenager. On the papers he stated that the mother was pure-blooded and the father was half, making “Katya” three-fourths pure.
They lived in a small wizarding village near Vrasta for a long while, and Katya grew up as a Bulgarian child. Her first language was Bulgarian, and her second was Romanian. Eventually, she picked up Romani as well. Trey taught her English, discovering early that she had a knack for languages. He struggled to help her manage her abilities as a metamorphmagus, and ultimately ended up helping her very little. The slightest emotional change would show in her colouring, and when she was truly angry, her fingernails and teeth would get slightly pointer. Trey was doting, partly out of guilt and partly out of honest affection, and she grew up (if not a bit exacerbated with him) to be quite fond of him, believing him to be her true father. After all, it was just she and him, and he was her sole benefactor. She grew to love him, just as any child would.
In 2002, when Katya was seven years old, Trey very suddenly announced that they were moving. They packed up and left for the big city, something that upset Katya a great deal, for she liked her chilly little home near the caves of Ledenika. In her anger over his suddenly guilty, dodgy, reclusive demeanour and the unexpected move to Sofia, she broached the forbidden question: she asked about her mother. She had always, first out of ignorance and then out of understanding of her ‘father’s delicate feelings, avoided asking about her mother. Trey had not reacted wonderfully. He had moaned and groaned, hiding his guilty expression in his hands, and told her the lie that he had told the government, word for word. Naturally, Katya was shocked and hurt, and for a while had a bit of an identity crisis; most children who find out that they are adopted at that age inevitably do. It passed quickly, however, and soon Trey (believing falsely that Trevor and his entire family had been found dead) returned to his old self again. Life continued as usual, and Katya began to adjust to being a very little person in a big city.
Katya left for Durmstrang in 2004, utterly excited and frightened. She did very well in her studies – though she was not the best – even though she tended to fail socially (and it was entirely for lack of trying). There was nothing to do but to study, consume knowledge, practice, experiment… improve. Self-improvement became an obsession. She wanted to master things, to hold more and more knowledge, to be better and better and many more things.
It was in her third year in school that two very important things happened: first, her “father” began a serious relationship with a woman named Angelica; second, Katya discovered duelling. Katya wasn’t happy with the invasion of Angelica into her summers at home, especially since it has always been just she and Trey, and Trey had always devoted all of his free time to her. She felt pushed out of the way, and so decided to dislike Angelica even though she didn’t find anything else, particularly, to dislike about her. Duelling helped to take the edge off; and, as she discovered, she was good at it. She slacked off a bit in her studies (though by no means completely dropped the ball) and in turn threw herself more and more into improving her skill at duelling. She discovered more and more how ruthlessly competitive she could be, and though she did not particularly like thinking of herself in that light, accepted it nonetheless.
She went so far one time in her fourth year that she was nearly expelled. A young man had made a disparaging comment, being a bad loser, about her heritage – and being rather sensitive about that particular topic, she challenged him to a rematch on his terms. Hoping to scare her off of the challenge, he said that his terms would be for a completely free range of spells… even the unforgivables. Undaunted (though, honestly, a bit scared), she accepted anyway, and it was in a seedy little pub where more dangerous, unscrupulous fellows gathered to duel that they battled. Neither one of them had wanted to kill the other. She won the duel, honestly and fairly, and neither one of them had used any unforgivables. Still, somehow word leaked to a professor, and then to the headmaster, and both she and the boy were called in and fiercely admonished. Being that the boy’s father was a very rich man (and a death eater to boot), he was spared punishment, but Katya received two months of gruelling detention and was disallowed from participating in any duelling at all for the entirety of the following year.
The the half of the allotted next year (her fifth) she managed to very thoroughly and successfully ignore the ruling by morphing herself into disguises to participate. Having received a letter from Trey that December announcing that he and Angelica were engaged, she decided to decline going home for the Christmas break – and it would prove instrumental in deciding her fate. On an ordinary evening in the Durmstrang library, ordinary girl Katya got a visit from the Lord of all wizarding UK, Trevor Williams, and was informed that all that she had ever known was a lie – the man who raised her a kidnapper, the woman who gave birth to her murdered by the very same – and the next thing she knew, she was packing in a daze and being whisked off to England and instant celebrity status.
Katya was sorted into Ravenclaw when she arrived at Hogwarts, continuing where she left off and finding that she enjoyed it immensely. She kept up a continuous correspondence with both her father and Morgana Colloway, his Press Secretary and long-time lover. Between Morgana instructing her in proper public behaviour and etiquette, improving her English, adjusting to her new identity and new school, the remainder of the year was difficult to say the least. When summer came and the year was concluded, Katya was exhausted – and coming home brought its own score of difficulties. When her father began a relationship with his personal secretary Sienna Faber, she became fast friends with the upbeat woman and yet had to face the conflict it caused over her friendship with Morgana. Her little sister, Layla, remained bitter of her sudden entry into their father's attentions. Coming to terms with her new place in the public eye was a challenge, to say the least.
Shortly after returning to Hogwarts for her sixth year, Katya received the news that Trey had passed away from a heart attack shortly after she left… and learned, as well, of the harrowing circumstances that brought her into his care.
