His first thought? Thank God they went along with it. His second thought? Thank God the older of the two had latched on to the position of girlfriend. It made it much more believable, and there was that logical portion of his mind that reassured him that the younger girl probably looked more like she could have been his sister. Alexander probably would have released a sigh in relief had he not been trying to play some sort of role. If they had waited too long or shown confusion, the entire illusion would have been ruined. He did, however, crack a smile as the rather timid-looking girl slipped into the role, commenting on some sort of make-belief date. He shrugged in response, chuckling. What was a good response to that? He managed to keep his tone calm and casual, no sign of panic if it backfired. “How could I forget, darling? Just running a bit late, that’s all.” He was trying to get the words to roll off his tongue as if they were natural.
Almost instinctively, when she put her arm around him, his own arm moved around her upper back. It was a sort of defensive move, designed to send a very clear message to these men: back off. It was hard for him to tell if it was just acting or a genuine gesture. He didn’t like the way these men were treating the women. When the younger girl spoke, he rolled his eyes. It was something he might have done around an actual sibling, he knew. It was possible that it even made it more convincing. “I’m trying, aren’t I?” His eyes moved from the girl to the man who seemed to be the leader. He nodded slightly, one of his eyebrows raised. “You heard the lady. Scoot, boys. They don’t want you to be around.” For a moment, he thought that they were going to just leave. He tried to keep his cool. Would they really buy it? They all seemed to be looking back and forth between each other, as if they weren’t sure.
When the leader claimed there was no way they were all together, Alexander chuckled. He wasn’t sure if it was because of the truth behind it, or because they were still going with it. It took him a moment before he realized that perhaps the girls were still just as worried. He hadn’t gotten the men to leave them alone quite yet, and his brow creased slightly. Then the girl with her arm around him turned slightly and buried her face in his chest. He could feel the heat rising in his cheeks, and he was certain they were a crimson color. Alexander moved so both of his arms were around her. He hadn’t even realized he had done so for another moment. “It’s alright.” The words had slipped out, and for a moment he had forgotten what was going on. There was a jarring moment where he slipped back into reality. He cast the men a glare, eyes narrowed. His tone was obviously upset. “What did you do? Merlin’s beard, what’s wrong with you?”
There was little time for a response before he realized that the men were once more going to try and pull their wands out. He didn’t have a good way to get out of a situation if they actually casted any magic. He may have been able to take them with a wand, but that was something he was lacking. Alexander fought to keep his face blank, glancing over at the younger girl when she spoke up, teasing the men. It was a bold bluff, and it brought a smile to his face. He laughed slightly. “I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but taking on an entire restaurant is probably not going to land you any women.” He waved a finger. Although, if they did actually try to duel him, there was the possibility of physical fighting. Slowly, Alexander pried himself from the girl and moved in close to the leader. He grabbed the man by the collar of his shirt, his voice low. “Now beat it, before I beat your sorry arses.”
