If there was a scale to establish how embarrassed he was, he was certain that no numbers would be able to explain it. He wasn’t even sure how to explain what exactly was going on. He had never really been good with controlling his anger, but Alexander could remain cool and collected under all sorts of situations. And now? Well, now he was practically a mess. What was wrong with him? Here he was, smiling like an idiot and blushing like some sort of silly schoolgirl. He had even gotten excited when she had mentioned Honeyduke’s, though he was determined not to act like a child. What would she think of him? After a moment, another large question dawned on him. Why did he care what she thought of him? He was dragged out of his thoughts before realizing any answer, his attention snapping back to Lissianna when she spoke. Merlin’s beard, was she flirting with him? Was that the tone that she was using? At least, that was how it sounded. He figured that even his ears were red. He could feel his heart pounding, and it wouldn’t have surprised him if she had been able to hear it.
“I… uh…”
He never even managed to pull an answer together. He didn’t have to, before she responded. Instantly, a wide grin stretched across his face. He wasn’t even sure if he was all that excited about the candy, but something about the situation had him all sorts of giddy. This was turning out much differently than he would have expected, but Alexander wasn’t complaining. When she squeezed his hand, he nearly jumped. She had seemed so small and nervous, and now he was the one who was trying to play it cool. His head dipped in a nod, before he flashed her another smile. “Good.” He paused, fumbling slightly as he spoke up again. “I-I mean, I had been planning on it, but if y-you didn’t want to, then I was going to be stuck.” A chuckle managed to escape the man as his eyes landed back on Liss. “You’ll like it, I promise.” He tried to sound reassuring, though she didn’t quite seem so freaked out and frail now.
Truth be told, Honeyduke’s had been one of his favorite places as a student, despite the occasionally obnoxious crowd. He couldn’t remember the last time he had been inside, though. Certainly not since arriving, so it must have been back before – no, he wasn’t going to think of that. He needed to focus on something else; it was dangerous to get worked up. Hanging around this woman was definitely safer than getting stuck in the past. He pushed those thoughts out of his mind before holding the door open for Lissianna. The interior of the shop was enough to distract him from whatever sort of funk he had been slipping into, and a smile broke across his face, not to mention the realization that he was still holding her hand. It was exactly how he remembered it. His eyes drifted to her face, watching and waiting for a reaction. They were still barely inside the door, but it didn’t matter. He bit his lip, trying to mask the stupid smile that wouldn’t leave him alone. He gave up after a moment, still watching Liss. His tone was almost eager as he spoke, and he was viciously trying to hide it. “So, what do you think?”
She was closer to him, and he gave her hand a sort of reassuring squeeze. He wasn’t sure how to take her reaction. He had never been particularly good at reading people, and he was failing miserably right now. Was she excited? Nervous? At her question, the smile vanished. He was almost frowning, debating in his mind over what his favorite was. A slight wrinkle appeared between his eyebrows as he tried to figure it out. “The toffee is really fantastic. And the pumpkin fizz.” He paused, trying to come up with something else. As good as the sweets he mentioned were, he wasn’t quite sure if she would have wanted either of those. They weren’t particularly adventurous, though he probably would have been content to purchase far too much and hang on to it. “Have you ever had Fizzing Whizzbees?” As strange as it was to eat them, Alexander knew it was one of the products that really didn’t pop up too often elsewhere. He shrugged after a moment, taking a step forward. “Come on. You’re alright with anything here, except I’d suggest staying away from the acid pops. Why don’t we just take a look around? I-I can buy you something.” He ignored the heat that was rising in his face.
