Don’t eat too fast, he kept reminding himself. Eating an adequate amount of food had been a rough transition, but now that his stomach was accustomed to his typical diet, it always seemed difficult not to scarf down every last bit. Food was practically a luxury. Still, Alexander didn’t want to come across like a pig. Not to mention that the taste – though probably not the fanciest of meals – was much better than he was used to. His eyes were practically glued to the plate, as if looking away would cause the food to up and abandon him. That was a habit that would probably take a while to grow out of, he imagined. The ease of access to food in the past days had been incredible. Even if it had never been an issue until the arrest, it was proving difficult to revert.
A slight frown tugged at his lips at her words, though he nodded, his eyes still down. Hopefully it was enough to show that he wasn’t frowning explicitly because of Lissianna. It wasn’t how she had explained herself, he had no problem with that, it was just what her statement reaffirmed. The hierarchy. Purebloods versus those who were not. His stomach twisted slightly. What pureblood households once had house elves for, they now could have slaves as well, other human beings. His brow creased as he fought to keep himself calm again. Steady now, he mentally urged, mask your emotions. Somewhere along the line, he must have stopped eating, for his fork was no longer in his hand. He also had moved his gaze straight ahead. Quickly, he looked down, a mixture of horror and foolishness turning his cheeks red. What was wrong with him? He was finally getting things back together, and he had to go and fixate on the worse possible parts of the conversation he could.
By the time he managed to pull himself together and eat another forkful of food, he was suddenly aware of the fact that she was talking. His cheeks burst out new shades of red at the realization that he hadn’t been paying attention. Typical, even if he was genuinely curious about her. After all, if he was a mystery to her, she was to him. He had made a rash decision to step in back at the Three Broomsticks to help a woman, and somehow along the line, he found himself eating dinner with her. All he heard was something about foods tasting better the muggle way? She had to be of the required blood status to live in situations like this, but he still found himself wondering. She had such an unconventional mentality compared to some of the magical people he had met. “I know what you mean.” Somehow, miraculously, a smile had found his face as he looked up at her. “Real food can be so much better.”
At the mention of desserts, he bit his lip, trying to stop a large smile. Of course, he didn’t imagine she would have just forgotten their little detour to Honeyduke’s. He had probably been far too enthusiastic about the sweets. “Dessert…” Alexander gave Liss a sheepish smile before glancing back down to his plate. He had no doubt that when she admitted that she was good at something, she probably was very talented. She didn’t seem the type to be overconfident. “I have to admit, I’m a little jealous.” The heat was rising in his cheeks again. Could he go for thirty seconds without becoming a flustered idiot? He chuckled softly. “I, uh, was always the one who tried to just stay out of the way. I mean, kitchens can smell amazing. But I was definitely not the type to really help during dinner. I probably would’ve burnt our house to the ground in the process.”
A slightly awkward pause ended his speech as he cleared his throat.
“This is great, by the way. Have I, uh, already say that?”
