”Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to mourn the passing of an heir to a noble family. This gentle, young man sought above all to honor his family and our community through his pursuit of knowledge. What nobler venture is there to be gained than the mastery of the world for the advancement of one’s family and people? And so…”
The man officiating the funeral was dry, boring, and useless. Where did the purebloods get these guys? Really..it was an insult to Orion's supposed memory to have this tubby oaf talking about the boy like he knew him.
The Orion that Jake knew, for example, would not have been so stupid as to commit suicide. Sure, the boy was a little upset over their arrangement, but given the fact that the tracking spell on Burgess was still active and mobile made Jake realize that this grim dog and pony pony show was just that: a show. Sure, anybody who was an idiot would think that the body in the casket was the 'bright and shining future' or whatever overly flowery phrase the speaker was using, but it would take an idiot. Then again, Jake realized as he looked around at the crowd, most of the people here WERE idiots.
He and Cedric flanked the newly widowed Gemma, acting as support and escort for her. She'd been quiet today, and Jake wasn't sure how to interpret that. She'd been on a suicide watch since word came down from the ministry about Orion's accident. Obliviators had been sent on scene, but apparently, nobody needed a memory wipe because no paperwork had mentioned the resulting use of the charm in this particular case.
Which meant, Jake surmised, that Orion survived and gotten right where he needed to be. That in itself was impressive...Jake never would have thought about getting in contact with a muggle shadow agency by getting hit by a bus. That Orion was willing to go ahead and carry through with such a brash plan changed the way Jake looked at him.
"Blonde, second row, third in keeps looking at us. Either of you recognize him?"
Jake shook his head at Cedric's assessment of the crowd. His friend was good at security like this. The man had been watching their group for a bit now, and rather obviously. Jake was ready to leave, but he knew that Gemma would want to stay.
