December 26th, 1:00am
It was cold in the common room, even over by the fire, but Sofi couldn't feel the chill. Everything felt... numb: her body, her mind, even her soul. She couldn't wrap her mind around this... she just couldn't. This had to be some sort of horrible dream, but she still had the letter clamped tightly in her hand; she couldn't let it go, even if she'd wanted to.

Dear Miss Steel,
We regret to inform you that our investigations of the murders performed in Hogsmeade on December 23rd have revealed that Danika Steel was/were among the victims of the attack.
All effort possible will be made to resolve the nature ofhis/her/their murder(s), as well as the killer(s) responsible. Burial details will be carried out in accordance to his/her/their last will and testament(s), which are being located at this time, along with any other paperwork that may aid in the investigation.
If you have any information regarding these events, please inform the Ministry immediately.
Signed,
and then a signature Sofi couldn't even read. And that was all... that was all she knew: her mother were dead, probably murdered somehow, just as she'd feared that very day. As to where her father might be, what he might be doing there... she could only guess.
The letter hadn't even come until late in the evening of Christmas -- likely due to the owls attacking each other that morning and screwing up the mail. She'd been just about to lay down and try to get some sleep, when an owl had come knocking against the clerestory windows in the girl's dormitory. Thinking it might be for someone else, she'd gone and got it, only to start when the envelope had her name on it. The other girls had all wanted to know what the letter said, giggling over it, thinking it might be some sort of love letter or other, only to freeze right along with Sofi when the Ministry emblem was spotted.
She'd come out to the common room to read it, wrapped up in a blanket, wearing her nightclothes, hoping she'd get to go back and sleep, soon.
And now she'd been sitting here for the better part of three hours, while everyone else had slowly filtered out of the room, leaving her alone. Her eyes burned as she stared into the fire, but somehow she couldn't even cry: she was in too much shock for those sort of emotions. She had no idea what she'd do if someone else came in right now, but it couldn't be good... nothing could be good, right now...
[Note: This is the song from which I got the title, and also which gave me a lot of the muse for this post/thread.]
