Surviving. That was the only word Gemma could think of for how she was currently existing... "living" didn't even work, for that made it sound as though she could feel things. Her heart was far more numb than it had ever been in the days before she'd met Orion... she literally felt hollow, empty... dead. Still, she knew she'd eventually be able to come back to life; she just had to wait for her fiance, her lover, her only, to return to her. She knew he was coming back, but... her heart almost couldn't even believe it. Just after his birthday, just after they'd found out she was pregnant, with twins of all things, he'd had to leave?
He'll be back... she told herself for what felt like the millionth time that day alone, let alone all the days since he'd left, He'll come back to me. He loves me... But still, she couldn't focus on anything. Everything felt... frayed.... her mind, her heart, her soul. She needed to do something to distract herself, but she couldn't think of anything, and even if she did, nothing seemed interesting.
She lay on her side on her bed in Ravenclaw Tower for what felt like hours, her hand gently rubbing her belly where she knew the babies must be growing; they wasn't showing themselves yet, of course, but they were within her, giving her at least two tiny things to think about. She'd been feeling sick every morning right when she woke up, but the potion Madame Nakano had given her helped a great deal. She only wished, with the beginnings of tears in her eyes, that Orion was there to hold her, to heal her...
"That's IT." The words startled even her as they exploded out of her mouth; she wasn't even sure what they meant at first, but then she knew: she was done laying her, done with doing nothing. She had to do something, ANYTHING to distract herself. She literally leaped off the bed in a sudden explosion of movement and grabbed her wand off her bedside table, striding towards the door, only to turn back at the last second and stare at her trunk, biting her lip in nervous thought. She crossed to it and flung it open, digging down to the bottom to pull out a small cardboard box covered with words and pictures. She stared down at it as it sat in her slender palm, mouthing the words on it.
"Quality Hair Dye..."
She got back up and shut her trunk, leaving her dormitory with the box clenched tightly in her hand. She'd mentioned sometime last year to Sofi that she wished she could change her hair color somehow, but that charms didn't work on her Veela hair; as a truly magical substance, capable of powering a wand at its purest form, it rejected all spells placed on it that would alter its white-blond color. Her friend had laughed and jokingly suggested Muggle hair dye: since it wasn't magical at all, her hair might just accept it.
Over the summer, before Gemma had met Orion, Sofi had bought her the box that Gemma now held: the finest quality hair dye of a luxuriant dark brown shade, and all the other ingredients Gemma would need to successfully alter her hair color. Gemma had literally forgotten all about it, since she had met Orion only about ten days later. But now... she needed something to do, and this seemed as good an idea as any.
Gemma left the common room behind her, to the stares of most of the people in the room, and headed down to the nearest girl's bathroom, only to realize she would likely need a larger amount of water than what a sink could provide; her hair was down past her shoulders, now, after all. She immediately switched course, heading towards the literal bathroom, which was several corridors over. She'd not brought a bathrobe or anything, but there were usually towels in there... she hoped...
Entering the room, she flicked her wand at the doorknob, causing it to lock, before striding over to the tub in order to sit beside it. She set the box down and was reaching for her shirt in order to remove it when a sound behind her made her freeze. Someone... or something... else was in the room.
"H-hello?" she half-whispered, her voice still echoing in the silence of the room, clutching her wand tightly and raising the tip very slightly, "Who's there? Show yourself!"
