"So -- wait -- you didn't kill his father? What happened to my step mother?"
Trevor shook his head at his daughter's first question and was about to answer her second with an inconclusive, "I don't know," when Julian came out of his room with a flabbergasted, "What do you mean I was like a son to you?!" Honestly, he felt like he was in one of those serials read aloud on the Wireless right now. There certainly was enough drama. Too bad this was real life rather than a serial, though. At least that he could leave and have no potential negative consequences in any of his relationships with these two fifteen-year-olds. Katya's quiet greeting to Julian was enough to draw Trevor away from his thoughts.
The question was who to reply to first. He couldn't ignore either question, but both children were obviously going to be eager for a reply. Trevor sighed, sinking back against his chair as he decided answering in the order in which the questions had come would be best. "I have no idea what happened to your step mother, Katya. I was out, and I came home to her dead body, something none of us have been able to find any rhyme or reason for--much less, how someone found this place to get here to kill her." The most he could figure was some Death Eater or another who knew she was meant to have been killed years ago had decided to finish his job for him. Katya could deduce as much from what he'd told her or so he hoped.
"And yes, Julian, you were like a son to me," Trevor replied. "You might not like to hear it said, but you were like a son." He didn't know what else he could say to that one because it was a matter of convincing the boy, and that couldn't be done in a single sitting. It would have to happen over time. "Now, if you both would sit down and lower your voices, we can discuss whatever you'd like."
